Bird of prey in flight

I took this pic with the 350d in sports mode this afternoon.

Out of about 15 pics, this was the best that has decent focus, not sure of the species.

At a guess I would say that it is one of the Goshawk or Sparrow Hawk family, great pic.astroron

I was using the 90-300mm cheapie from canon, i will try again today and experiment a bit in getting better focus.

I have found a spot where about 20 of these birds group together, maybe some camo gear is in order to get right up close.....

Check out page 112 of "Field Guide to the Birds of Australia" Your bird looks very much like the Whistling Kite. Great shot too Trevor.

Think your right Paul, got the same book too, the distinctive tan colourings on the trailing edge of the wings between the black give the ID as a Whistling Kite.......top shots

:thumbsup: Spot on with the identification Paul, googled up some info on the species, and found it listed in the same location where i took these pics.

I am very happy with the detail and quality with the budget 90-300mm canon lens, it produces fine images as seen here, and a little bit of luck doesn't hurt any.....

Tony, there are a number of books that should be in everyones bookshelves. That's just one of them. If you can't get that one then get Field Guide to Australian Birds.

Oh ...and since I was a clubby with the Noosa Surf Club as a teenager ;)

Thanks for the kind respones, i am wrapped with the quality the 350D produced in these pics.

Shutter speed was alot faster than the first attempt, definately made all the difference, i hope to learn how to really use this camera, as the results can be amazing, would like to take shots like this consistantly, without the guesswork and luck i rely on at the moment.

:eyepop: A professional bird photographer would be extremely happy with a those shots Trevor! let alone for an early attempt :) wow! that was taken hand held with a non IS cheap 300 mm zoom GOOD GRIEF! what are the good IS zooms like ffs! Nice big 8mb chip - will print at highest res extremly well, if these are full frame, A4 edge to edge and beyond! champion stuff mate

PS those bird books can sometimes be tricky with local regional variations in species and all the juvenile stages we have found (we have "field guide to the birds of Australia" and that page you mention Paul is now pg 119) you need at least two or three books to cover the lot maybe

Thanks astroron, i am happy with the quality and just love these birds, i am looking at getting a decent lens soon, so i hope with a bit more practice, i can get some real pro shots, i hope.
