G'day all.
Just thought I'd mention that today marks the 154th anniversary of the battle of the Eureka Stockade fought way back in 1854.
"Roll out the flag of the Southern Cross."- Henry Lawson.

Thanks for the info Phil. I didn't hear any mention of it anywhere today.

That is a bit sad really as I see it as one of those defining moments in Australian history that helped to build the nation and give it it's strength.

Cheers

Just as an aside, - anyone interested in Australian history should have a read of Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes. It's back in print again and is a real eye-opener into our past.

Cheers

That doesn't really surprise me Ric.
Every year this date rolls past with nary a mention in the media. If this was America, it would be a public holiday. Whatever you may think of the Yanks, they do honour their history.
Sadly, the attitude of the average Australian to their history is one of "Best We Forget." :(

I have to admit (with some shame) that I haven't read that one yet but thanks to your prompting, I intend to patch that particular hole in my reading asap.
Australian history is a wild and colorful series of events that should be read by all.
Most importantly - it's OURS!

Nice to see Geoff, it would have nice to have seen it become Australia's national flag all those years ago.

The Jolly Roger looks a classic as well

yes - well my brother would agree with that whole heartedly

the flags are run up for all gatherings at the "Bruxner Rd Crematorium" on my brother's property which lies halfway between Tabulam and Drake
