I thought as my mount was not tracking well to have a go at the 30 second trip so here is the result...all at 1600iso, 10 darks, put in forty shots but dont know how many were used. Thru 160sn 450d canon eq6 mount unguided.

AND here is one of LMC using the 70/300 lens ...300 secs at 1600 4 frames..4 darks. stacked in deep skystacker.

Hi Alex,

I like the look of the LMC shot you've taken. Was that at 70mm focal length on that lens? Any chance of a higher res version? The first shot seems very green to me?

Well done, Alex. Pretty green spider. And I like the LMC. (Lots of clouds here, but none of them Magellanic, alas.) Very impressive results.

Green you say... that does not surprise me must be living in the bush.

Troy a high res is not on unfortunately...I am on 3g pre paid and down to my last couple of dollars so I can not upload much until a recharge.

I cropped the shot but it was at 70 approx.

I just wanted to encourage folk who dont have well tracking mounts that you can still have a go using 30sec and a big stack...

Gee I envy your very dark skies there. The LMC is a VERY deep shot indeed.

Thank you Scott.
Yes I am very lucky as to the South there is only forrest and farms further South until you get to Grafton some 100 klms away by road so as far as shots to the South there is minimal polution...and to the North there is Tabulam and I think its lights out there when the chooks go the bed.

I was surprised with the shot thru the 70/300 lens and I hope that others can see getting started in astro photography via such a cheap standard
lens (under $200) and also that those who dont have a good mount can use the 30 second approach to get some satisfying results to start their new hobby.

Thanks again.

I'm with you on that one Alex.
It's amazing what you can achieve even with 10 second subs.
