My laptop is not well.

This morning my AV software detected a virus and told me to reboot to clean the infected file. It seems the "cleaning" process was to simply delete the file, which happened to be basemts32 which windows won't run without:doh:. Consequently, after the windows flash screen, I get the blue screen of death.

The IT dude at work has it ATM to see what he can do before I resort to the restore disk (which must be around here somewhere:eyepop::lol:... I had when the computer was new... before I moved...).

If he's not able to come up with the missing file, I might put out an APB for a copy of the file from someone running Windows XP Home Edition SP3. Fingers crossed I won't need to do that yet:whistle: but it might still be preferred to doing the full restore thing...

Try running restore.

I had a similar problem - one of those stupid windows updates - was a con by microsoft - tells you have problems but to get rid of them you have to pay to get the full version and wouldn't let me out of the loop.

Easy fixed - control+alt+delete and then when XP had rebooted I did a Sophos Virus scan - found NOTHING !!! so did a RESTORE to a prior restore point and no more problems.

Whats the OS. 95, 2000, NT, XP, VISTA ????

At the starting windows sceen in DOS press F8 to bring up the menu and go in on safe mode. Once in this run the AV and see what it picks up. Failing that if their is a file missing then get a PC with the same OS and copy the file from one PC to the other and try that.

Going in on safe mode bypasses the start up script and usually viruses put them selfs in the start up script.

Hope this help

Cheers

Might have worked had I been suspicious enough not to do as the AV software said and reboot - which got rid of the file. Once that was done it wa a bit more terminal than that... no safe mode, nothing past the flashscreen:rolleyes:.

Its running XP Home Edition SP3. As I said above, we tried safe mode, but no go - just the blue screen of death waiting on the other side of the windows flash screen.

Hopefully replacement of the correct basemfs32 file in the right spot will fix the problem. As mentioned earlier the IT dude at work has it ATM to do some of his white fella magic on it to try to replace the missing file.

Just trying to do everything possible to avoid doing a complete reinstall:doh:.

All the best with it, this stuff reminds me why I dumped Windoze as my primary OS. So many BSoDs over the years, so many rebuilds...
