Orion Wide Field

I took these early last month.

5 x 1 minutes taken with the Canon 20d at ISO 400, lens Canon 50mm f1.8.

The other photo is the reason why the first image wasn't 6 x 1 minutes.
I think it was the late flight in from Bali.

That's terrific for 5 min, nicely processed !
Both the 40D and the 50mm (nifty fifty) sure can deliver.
I think the 40D is one of the best DSLR bodies for astro atm and the nifty fifty is the best bargain going, it's a great performing lens.

Agree. To pick up Barnard's loop with only 1 min subs is cool. A couple of f-stops down would improve the quality. Nice work JJJ.

Alex, the images were taken, pre-eq5. I used the Ioptron Cube and mounted the camera to that.
I could only take 1min subs to prevent field rotation.

A wonderful result for such short exposures!

I did something similar (http://members.optusnet.com.au/mrozycka/Magellan_Observatory/Magellan_Observatory_20061118_Orion .html) exactly two years ago! I hope to tackle this, once again, using a modified camera and my 24-105 f/4L to frame /all/ of Orion. :)

However, to me, the stars look a bit fuzzy.. Were you shooting wide open?

Only because I was limited to 1 minute exposures using this particular mount, I wanted as much light as possible. (excuses excuses)
Next time I'll slow it down a couple of notches and add more subs to compensate.
Just need the clouds to clear.
