Having just attended the IISAC, it was wonderful to catch up with some of the great people who participate in this forum.
It was great that everyone had name badges, so you knew who was who.
Still, it was sometimes a challenge to place faces to online names with real names. I know from talking to others at the camp I was not the only one who struggled with this.
If you are comfortable with putting your portrait photo up as your Avatar, it would be a great way to become known to other members.
As the saying goes "You never forget a face". :hi:

Good idea, but not everybody is as good looking as you! :P

Now I know you are Joking Jakob ;)
That's why I do 4 radio shows a week, I have a great face for radio
It's a good idea Ian, I noticed you changed your avatar.
I think you need to get a closer shot of yourself, it's still a little hard to see your face, even though I know what you look like, others still may not recognize you from this current avatar.
Do you have a closer shot of yourself?
I think Houghy's is a good example, he's instantly recognized right across the universe.

I must put up a new one:)...the beard is gone as is the shoulder lenght hair...I look very ordinary now such that shoppers approach me in shops asking where they can find this or that...even folk around here do not recognise me with the new image...
ONE day I will go to a star party someplace and I bet no one will recognise me:D... as I look so much younger and more handsm than any photo can show:whistle:

Unless you suffer from Prosopagnosia or face blindness, namely the inability to recognise faces unless you see them lots of times. I can never remember what someone looks like if I meet them once (even over a dinner) and then don't see them again for 6 months or so. Most embarrassing when someone in the street greets you and they look like a complete stranger.

I was sitting in my Son's car when this old woman leaned in the driver side and said...
"how are you young man?"...
I knew she must know me and I must know her but I did not have a clue... then it dawned on me..it was my Son's mother...my first wife...I guess I did forget her after all.

Is there something about Astronomers with "Facial Hair":shrug:kev's picture is to small to see if he is sporting any;)
Ron
My mug's been hidden away in my public profile for the last 2 years. I think my telescopes look much sexier for an avatar
1ponders is a legend I tell you !!
This shot was taken when he attended the first IISAC and even though the weather was 'slightly' mild, he insisted on sporting a 'Geoffrey Owl' freezer suit prototype for our benefit.
The facial hair was to prove he was a legit amateur astronomer.

LOL Rick, actually I did Google trying to find a good shot of height bars but in the end just left it transparent.

No, you mustn't. Even my non-astronomy friends, to whom I post random IceInSpace links to, know who you are because of your avatar. :P
As Andrew said, earlier on in the thread, you are instantly recognisable across the Universe. :P

I am getting so sick of it...the beard never was me so I did not relate..it was someone else...but seeing me is too much...still I think the face to the name thing is great for a site like this.

Gee this is really starting to catch on
Like all important things in life it is about relationships and putting a face to a name and a conversation really makes a difference.
By the next Astrocamp we should all know each other by sight

How do you get to alternate the picture for the avatar? I don't mind putting in a mug shot for my human side, but I don't want to lose my canine aspect.
astroron
24-12-2008, 12:04 AM
There is only one thing wrong with RB's Mug Shot, in the place with the bars they don't let you keep your sunglasses on:P
Ron
 yeah i want to know how to do that too :help:
