This one blew me away.

Adam block is one of those quiet achievers (albeit with a *really nice telescope* at a great site) that consistently produces great images.....

That is beautiful. I've only ever seen photos of the inner shells - never realized there was such delicate "lacework" outside that! Thanks Peter.

To be honest any image at http://gallery.rcopticalsystems.com/ by anyone looks stunning. Do any of those people know that investing in depreciating assets is not a good idea.

How do they get a return from the investment?
I mean we're talking $35K minimum.....
That is not a hobby it's a business...

You could say the same thing about a ferrari or a porsche, but if fast cars aren't your thing and you have $100K+ to spend then why not spend it on your hobby?

I've never seen the outer shells as well, I suppose that he used some sort of HDR processing?

 If you have to ask then you can't afford one....

Seriously, we are in the institutional league here (that particular telescope belongs to a University) ... about $US250k

Depreciating assets?

Try boating.... Bring up two children.... or a second wife.... now that's expensive! :)

BTW last time I checked....you can get more for nearly any Astro-Physics scope on Astromart than what they cost when they were new.

Indeed... AP scopes appreciate the minute you get your hands on them, because if someone was to buy it from you, they pay a premium for having no wait time...

Sure investing in depreciating assets isnt financially a good plan, however, buying telescopes/astronomy gear sure does make me happy. Isn't that what lifes all about... Sure my ~13k of gear might not be worth 13k anymore, but still, I get the same big smile on my face every time I see it all set up, I get the same enjoyment every time I use it... So in a way, to me, it has not depreciated at all... its still priceless...

I'm sure we would all love to have a scope like that sitting in it's custom built observatory on it's own mountain top somewhere in South America or the like.
I haven't seen such a widefield view of the Cat's Eye before regardless of which scope it was imaged with. I still prefer the glorious Hubble images of this beautiful object.

p.s. I can't afford a Hubble Space Telescope either.

Thats an odd comment. Looked at the cost of a Hot rod, tricked up Harley, holiday house, motorised caravan, jet ski boat, ultra liite plane and all the other toys ppl buy ?. I bet "return on investment" is hardly the motivation in most cases. Would be a sad world if enjoyment was based purely on monetary return. Not to say money always creates joy, its just sometimes the spending-of is the required entry fee :P
