Hi Petra,

$3.85 worth of coins for $104.55 plus GST coming to $115.00.
A 2,887% markup. You would think the Royal Mint must have a license to
make money! Hang on a moment, how about that, they do have a license
to make money! Well I'll be ...

There's something funny about those coin sets - the up close image of the 6 coin set seems to show that only 1 or 2 coins are actually "special" Year of Astronomy coins, and the image of the 2 coin set shows only 1 that is a Year of Astronomy coin, albeit both are different coins to those in the 6 coin set.

Does that mean you have to buy both sets to get all the new coins - any collectors here who may be able to shed some light on this?

Very good eyes you have there!

It looks like you are right, in fact, the web page does mention something along those lines:

Following on from the success of the 2008 year sets, the Royal Australian Mint releases the new 2009 themed $1 and a 20 cent coin design that will feature in the two coin set and six coin set in both uncirculated and proof finishes.
An affordable way of owning the uncirculated International Year of Astronomy themed $1 coin and the 2009 Platypus 20 cent piece.

Each set contains one special coin, so to get both special coins you need to purchase both the 2 coin set and the 6 coin set!

What's the difference between 'uncirculated' and 'proof' coins:shrug:

I saw the 6 coin set in my local Post Office shop today, they didn't have the 2 coin set and when I asked they said no, none in stock, may not get any.

Yes, the big set looked great, but I think it's a bit of a con that you have to buy both sets and still only get 2 "special" coins.

Note there is presently a reduced price, $95 inc GST for the 6 coin set ....

"The 2009 Six Coin Proof Set was incorrectly advertised at $115.00 both in the Mint Issue, order form and on the website, the correct price is $95.00, with an increase to $115.00 to take effect from the 31/12/08. The Royal Australian Mint apologises for any inconvenience this may have caused."

At the Royal Mint in Canberra, they have this machine that you can stamp out your very own 1 dollar coin.
You put in a 2 dollar coin and then turn this large handle which operates the press that presses out the blank. So for the princely sum of $2, you can purchase $1:D:P
That's the answer to our woes, get Kev to get us all to put our savings into that machine, and he will soon recoup his 10 billion;)

Yep. Been there, done it. And I too stood there with my new $1 coin in hand with the faint suspicion I'd been taken!!!

Apparently I've been a good boy this year
Someone has just ordered both the 2 coin and 6 coin sets of these in Proof version for me for Christmas.
