I am pondering purchase of a 12" SkyWatcher dob. How good is the standard focuser, should I opt for a 10:1 focuser instead of the standard one?

Anything else that I should consider?

Don't know much about the Skywatcher dob (mine's a GSO) nor about the package you're considering.
As far as the focuser goes though, you will definitely benefit from getting the 10:1. Ease of use between the two just doesn't bear comparison.
As much as I hate to complicate things at this stage; have you considered getting either a cheshire tube or laser collimator? Collimation will rear its ugly head sooner or later, so you might as well be prepared.
Other than that, just keep asking questions. Someone here will have answers for you.
Cheers.

Thanks for that Phil.

I have looked at collimation, laser is probably the way I will go. Would you believe that I am actually looking forward to fooling around with collimation? Fine calibration alwasys has appealed to me, although my little Celestron has not needed to be touched!!

I'd suggest the 10 to 1 focuser...the standard is okay but the finer control is something that many people enjoy.

I'd recommend staying away from a cheap laser collimator...I highly recommend the Orion chesire...unless you invest in a "good" laser collimator your accuracy maybe beter with the simple chesire (IMHO)...

Good Luck!

I have just got myself a 12" ASDX GSO Dob, from andrews comunication. The focuser works really well...I also got the GSO Delux laser collimator and now use it to perfection. I am splitting stars and have perfect round in/out focus stars with spider dead center!!!

The laser is quick and easy to use...

Good luck with your researching
Dave
