LOL tonight I grabbed Alan Meehan and headed to the shores of Lake Macquarie at Warners Bay this evening on the spur of the moment to try out a "new technique" (well for me anyway) taking 30 second shots on the tripod and stacking them using the Startrails software package. The new part was using the 400D with my 350 cooled camera battery pack power lead and a 17AH battery supply. Success.

I also used my new sigma 18-200mm image stabilised lens - looks ok to me.

now there is a lession to be learned here boys and girls. a 120 plus KG person walking around a tripod based on spungy shoreline turf/surface should never be undertaken at the same time as you will see inthe image. High cloud came through and we had a sprinking of fireworks in the distance in the last few frames which looked as though we blew up Venus as it set LOL. the stars came in and out of view constantly, you can ssee the effect of te high cloud on Venus. But i had fun and discovered new things, and worked out a few bugs. I look forward to trying this again at lostock in a weeks time:D without the walking effects:rofl: about 70 odd 30 second shots in this one.

Went for a whirl around the universe with the 100mm binos too:D:) Alan had a ball:thumbsup: after we packed up we then visited a few other like minded individuals who were observing on a hill at boolaroo - great to catch up with you Eddie and Ron, George and Lydia (who drove off as Al and I arrived to go to the aid of her Daughter who just went into Labor). Thanks for the hospitality Patrick!

also sorry didnt know quite where to put this post:whistle:

Nice one Dave, the effects look great and the exploding Venus looks a ripper.

Sometimes the not so perfect image can look just as good.

Cheers

thanks guys. yes it would have been a lot better if Al and I stayed still, or better still nowhere near the camera. We were both going backwards and forwards from the tripods to the big binos looking around the place and checking that the system was still working. Big mistake!! needed to have ste it and then walked away - for a long time. But the fireworks was a very unexpected bonus. I cobbled the images together into a avi video that i made with the same programme, but it is huge at nearly 80mb but it looks cool. you can see the clould rolling on through the shots and the cars moving, then venus explodes . I will have to work out how i can make it small enough to post somewhere?:help:

Are you talking about the hill that overlooks where the old "Stink Works" used to be ?

I would think that the seeing from there wouldn't be too flash with Argy Shopping Centre, and the bright lights at Warners Bay and Speers Point and the so close . Where's the access road to get to the "lookout" ?

You should try Valentine Park , it's in a light shadow so protected from much of the light from Belmont, Newcastle, Charlestown and Warners Bay.

you know this image looses all effect - it really needs to be played as a avi to get the real effect - the clouds move as well then you get to see venus blow up LOL. Yes Ian that is where patricks place is
