With today being the big day for the MARS HOAX event, the hoaxers are going into overdrive !
I received this nonsense today, followed by usual dribble.
Mars is going to be a second moon of earth for a day
NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN.
Blah, Blah, Blah .........

yibida yibida...That's all folks. Blah Blah Blah. I have been getting spammed to the max from every friend that knows I'm into astronomy. And when I sent out a mass emailing to everyone debunking this dribble, you should have read some of the upset emails I recieved back. Seems like everyone wants to believe the hoax and get very defensive when you burst their bubble.

Mine of course :P
Actually just pointing out that the constellation that people think they were born under (Sun Sign) is not the case (due to presession of the earth on its axis) is enough to upset some.
It frightens some people to think that they may actually be in contol of their lives & not the stars, moon, planets etc .... :scared2:

Oh, that's alright then. I thought you'd told them that astrology was total bunkum. That'd put the newpaper industry out of business. I know of people that that is the main reason they get the paper, to check their horrorscope. :P
Our local rag even run the hoax in today’s edition I've sent an email to the editor. It's a shame to think that some people will look and be disappointed.

I've had 2 enquiries today already! And yes as Mick said there's a big load of tripe in the local paper. Unreal! Wonder if it will also make the TV news?

I have had emails from people who call themselves amateur astronomers asking about this crap, anyone with even a small amount of knowledge about the planets would not waste a moment of there time even considering reading this nonsence.astroron

T'was even announced on the ABC local radio this morning @ various times from 5.30 am onwards. I nearly got out of bed to phone in & inform them of the error/re-hashed story, but I didn't. :D L.

yep same here - ppl that know i know a little bit about it have asked me, and i received the email a few times as well - the person(s) who are responsible for this outrage should be sent to mars, without a suit or craft :mad2: :wink2: I saw an attractive young lady from the US launched from a cannon at the brisbane eccy last weekend - i think that would be the go :)

I started getting asked about this as early as February, lots of people asked me about what it was all about and I sent them back emails or spoke to them on the phone about it. Like you Paul, I have had every person that knows I am into astronomy ask the very same question time and again.

Yeah, I have had a number of people ask me about it, and send me emails etc because they know I am interested in astronomy. I wonder if what has happened is that someone has read an old article about the 2003 close encounter, and they have assumed it was for this year, and, like chinese whispers, the idea has been passed on ad nauseum.
This year we will have the closest contact with Mars on 30 October, will be nowhere near as good as 2003, a bit better though for the Northern hemisphere.
I saw Mars rising last night above the trees at about midnight last night with some of the guys at Kulnura. It is such a lovely orange naked eye object when you put aside the equipment and just enjoy its brightness in the sky at the moment.
