This is a hypos ethical question just in case I come into some money (I wish)
I live in the outer suburbs, light pollution is not too bad and I can see 5mag stars
What would be the best telescope I could buy, up to $20000 for planetary observation and imaging from here

mate to narrow the options what do you want to do as you can get into two completely specialised areas with that sort of money

If those are Australian dollars you're coming into then I'd recommend a 66mm refractor (hand held). :)

Otherwise, I could easily spend this sort of money for you without even trying. USD, no shipping:

D & G 11" f15 achro ... $10,495.00
Astrophysics 1200 ... $9,400.00

Spend the change on some champagne.

Hi Mike
What sort of $20000 66mm, it would be some sort of refractor

Just the usual sort of 66mm - Don't mind me, it's just the usual whine about import prices, I'll get over it. Eventually. Maybe.

Back to your imaginary spend: I'd also consider something like a 25” f/5 SDM (www.sdmtelescopes.com.au), they look like beautiful scopes, and if I live long enough I may even get one for real. It's nice to dream occasionally.

With the change you can buy some nice eyepieces and a real good planetary camera...

I would spend it on a mount first. Then what is left spend on a nice scope.
$20000 get you some nice gear.

Here you go, look no further, you can have this complete set-up, minus the two 5D's for 20,000.

Takahashi FSQ-106, G11 Mount, plus all the extras, for guiding and powering the unit, and a mile of cables, plus heaps of bits and pieces. ;)

Leon
