Hi all,

I moved from Sydney to Canberra in April, 2006. I have driven back and forth countless times, and, every time I either drove up or down this hill, I told myself that I was going to image it some day. Well, today I was driving back from my parents place, and, it was that day.

It was a glorious afternoon, as you can probably see. :)

I can only imagine what this place looked like when it was actually a lake.

Anyway, being a glutton for punishment, I decided to try an HDR mosaic. This is a mosaic of 8 images, each of which was a 3-image HDR composition (AEB on the camera).

The full resolution Photoshop *.PSD file came to close 600 MB. The full resolution *.JPG image weighs in at over 25 MB.

I have heavily scaled the image down to be able to post it as an attachment on here.

Oh, and to tie it to astronomy, for once, you can see the almost-full Moon! This is facing directly East -- I will have to try for an evening version some day, with the Moon rising. Would be spectacular, I reckon.

Data: Canon EOS-350D, Canon EF 24-105mm F/4L (set to 50mm and stopped down to F/8).

Edit: I just viewed the uploaded image, and it is horribly artifacted -- you can barely make out the Moon. Oh, well, you get the idea. :)

Comments and critique, welcome.

Regards,
Humayun

A beautiful HDR mosaic vista Humayun, I love it !

From memory they are red/white balls that are placed along power lines presumably to warn low flying aircraft I think.

how did you do it??

David,

Cheers, mate!

I think Andrew is correct, further below, in that they're probably there for paragliders and light aircraft to warn for electrical power lines.

Eric,

Thanks. :)

I have seen it with just a little bit of water in it when we had good rains a few months ago. But, there was never any blue sky to enjoy it with.

Al,

Cheers, mate. :)

Andrew,

Thank you. :)

David,

I shot three images (auto-bracketed) and then moved the tripod a bit, and then repeated.

I was experimenting with a image processing technique in Photoshop, however, I think I may have overdone it just a smidgen. Still, I have the original 600+ MB monster of a *.PSD and can always go back to it... if my laptop will load it. :)

Ta!

Humayun

Excellent image Humayun. You have captured this area very nicely. We have been past this area many times in the past couple months and I have wanted to take some shots from the lookout but have never been up to it.

What time did you take these images because the weather in Canberra was terrible late in the afternoon. Certainly doesn't show it in the image.

Very well done and thanks for sharing.

Matty,

I shot this close to 6 PM. I drove past it on Tuesday, and, it's looking even nicer than it did on the weekend! Get out there and take some shots!

Thanks!

Humayun

Lovely panorama Humayun, it's still dry as. It's also been a while since I've seen it that green.

Last bushfire season we were putting a fire out in the middle of it, I think we'll be doing the same again this year.

Cheers

Ric,

Thanks, mate. :)

I had no idea that it caught fire out there!

About a month and-a-half ago, I was driving back to Sydney and the road just around from there was all covered in ice. A few car accidents, to boot. It was pretty darn cold! Two extremes. :)

Humayun

Oh, hell no!

This was from many years ago when I was experimenting with multi exposure HDR pano blending, overdone clown vomit filter plus Lab colour.

I would like to redo this location with the gear I have now and with better light.

When I drove to Canberra a few weeks ago and passed this location I thought it looked like a great spot for a pano.

Especially with those wind farms on the ridge

David,

This is far, far, far from the best! Look at the grass and sky... it's not right.

I have always wanted to go back and re-do this area. Maybe a Moonrise panoramic... There's a little bit of water in there at the moment. It mght look quite nice.

I hope to unleash it to the world in the next couple of weeks. The shopping cart module is complete, but, there's a couple of little issues that need taking care of with regards to image display. I also need to get my backside out to a couple of custom framing places and see if I can take photographs of frames I'd like to use so they can also be seen on the site. Currently, I'm just using some I found on the web for development purposes. If I put the site up live right now, I could potentially get in trouble for using other people's images (of frames).

You've got me psyched up to go and redo this now!

i am glad your psycho about this, so are we waiting for the unleashed pit bull or the hound ?

as for the image - dont mind it , its rather illuminating! maybe some of your potential customers might like it - something like your eiffel tower shot.

good luck framing.

you might as well put it up then add to it as you go along
