On a recent trip to the UK, apart from suffering IIS withdrawal symptoms, I had occasion to go to the Western Eye Hospital in London where this plaque is displayed in the entrance lobby. It reads:
"In memory of James Nasmyth, Engineer, astronomer and artist, born in Edinburgh 19th August 1808, died in London 7th May 1890. Mr. Nasmyth bequeathed the munificent sum of £18,000 to the funds of this hospital."
Nasmyth is a familiar name to most IIS folks. Quite a remarkable man, methinks.
