Just out of curiosity, does anyone have any idea of what sort of import duty you could expect on an item from the states worth around $3000 which includes GST. No I'm not getting a 20Da or buying ving an Argo Narvis via the states.

I wouldn't have a clue Paul. Best bet would be to give Australian Customs a ring i guess.

Didn't beleive the $250 price on the customs slip when article posted, so they valued the item at more than double what I paid, so I had to pay that (20%) and holding charges. turned out to be an expensive item. Also got a etx from a policeman in NZ. i also got slugged with that one too even though full Price was disclosed. Chook lotto really, sometimes you get caught and sometimes you don't. Mind you I have one more than I have lost!

Thats a bummer Dave ! I've never paid more than 10% GST ,there is no duty charge as such anymore . So you had this problem coming from NZ did you ? oh there is a small fee about $50.00 or something around there. Oh yes when I picked up my camera they made me go into my PayPal account and show them the transaction.

So basically it boils down to who checks your stuff on the day and what sort of mood they are in. Hrmph sounds like a government dept. Anyone know someone in customs ;)

I brought in about 3k worth of scope about 6 weeks ago. You dont pay import duty on Optical Telescopes, but you pay brokerage fee of about $50 and then GST on the price including shipping cost. So if scope cost 2500 and you pay 500 shipping you will be up for $300 GST and $50 brokerage fee
