Penny Sackett, an astronomer at ANU, has been appointed as Australia's new Chief Scientist. It's nice to see an astronomer in such a position and great to see another woman in such a leading position.

BTW the CEO of the Australian Research Council is also a woman - Margaret Shiel. Back in '91 when she taught me analytical chemistry she was a senior lecturer. Since them she has risen to full professor, then Dean of Science, Pro Vice Chancellor (Research) and now CEO of the ARC. And she is a mass spectrometerist!!

Congrats to Penny, that should raise the profile of Astronomy a few more rung up the ladder.

Yep we overlapped our PhD studies at UNSW back in the late 70s - in different areas of mass spectrometry. She's full professor and CEO of the ARC and I'm... err...well...anyway, I've still got my PhD. :rolleyes:

Excellent news!

The chief scientist here in WA is also a woman atm. If I recall correctly its Lyn Beazley.
