First light with my "EzyStyles" modded camera

I have recently had my 350d "EzyStyles" modified with Baader replacement filter. Overall I am very happy with the modified camera. The turn-around service by Eric was efficient and the camera was returned in perfect working order.

So here is first-light of M16 - Eagle Nebula.

This image was 10 x 5min @ ISO400 using IDAS-LPS filter from suburban Perth backyard.
Darks and Flats taken, stacked with DSS and processed in PS.
(I think that more images to stack would of been better to help smooth the image. It is really quite amazing how much H-Alpha is recorded with a modded camera.)
Image taken through my C8 SCT with 6.3 focal reducer.

Any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Great shot there Ian, very nice. I noticed that you are using the reducer with the C8. Do you get any vignetting?? Therefore do you have to crop the image??

My "easystyles" modded 20D is really superb.
Thanks Eric you do a great job at an even better price.
Ive increased its functionality by using the video out cable that comes with the 20D camera to attach a 5" colour monitor which now rides with my TVGuider on top of my scope setup. Easy focusing even using a Bahtinov mask.

The increased sensitivity to H-alpha is surprising and really makes a difference. I can not wait to try it out on more targets. Unfortunately it is raining in Perth at the moment so I will have to wait for clear skies.



Hi Daniel - I have recently changed my imaging setup - and this has significantly reduced any vignetting when using the focal reducer. The image of M16 below is full-sized and no cropping has been done. I found that the distance from the focal reducer to camera is important. If this distance is too long then vignetting is introduced.

Thanks for the reply Ian. What distance are you using? I have seen literature which suggest the distance should be around 105mm, which is what I have set up for. I would imagine that as you reduce the distance, then the focal ratio would increase???

Hi Daniel, my distance from focal reducer to camera is about 90mm. I spoke to the nice people at Bintel who suggested a 2" SCT Adaptor. This has given me a flatter field with less vignetting than previous set-up (it is also much easier to achieve focus). My previous set-up had a distance of 115mm, which gave me all sorts of problems.

Gee's Ian, thanks for your compliments and a fine image of the eagle nebula! heaps of details and the eagle shows up nicely. I still lurk around IIS but have gone quiet due to my career commitments and moved back to my parents house which is impossible for me to image. thanks to allan, robin and some of you other guys for your kind and nice words also. :)

Eric, I just pulled an all-nighter with my modded 20D. Your camera has finally been able to give me the photo that got me into this hobby in the first instance. I've tried to get this shot with an un-modded 350D with about an hours exposure. The UV filter on that 350D was a brick wall to H alpha. If I stretched it hard in PS I could just see it. Ive attached a shot of the HH 6x5 min stacked with DSS and stretched in PS.

horsehead looks fantastic! colours are well balanced. i'm definitely falling behind. There are heaps of great imagers on IIS! more than ever. seeing alot of new names churning out wonderful images. keep them up everyone. :thumbsup:
