Fortunately we were only on the edge of the storms that moved through the Brisbane valley last night so we only got part of the light show. It was worth setting up for a few shots though. ;)
Great looking shots Paul.
Is it difficult to capture images like this? Are you using a tripod + shutter release?

Thanks Michael.
They are quite easy actually. The camera is definitely on a tripod, I'm using a cable release and ISO100. I live in a nice dark site and I don't have sky glow to worry too much about so I generally keep the shutter open for 30 - 40 sec, or until I get a strike. Then I shut immediately. When I lived in town I was limited to about 10-15 sec before the glow become noticeable. The lens was a 28-90 zoom and the images were cropped. I'd like to get a nice wide field prime for this sort of shooting as the zoom is too soft.

Damn, we just don't get storms like that where I live. Or when we do, I can't see enough sky to capture shots like this.
I'm dying to capture some lightning shots.
Very nice work!

You need to come up here for a holiday for a few weeks Mike. ;) Now's the time of year for it.
Actually this one is a few weeks early. Hope it's not an omen of the weather to come. :scared:

Nicely captured Paul, nothing like the excitement of a good lightning storm. We had one here a week ago, our office lady lost her DVD recorder, TV, surround sound system and microwave oven all in one hit.

Great shots Paul! I'll have to give this a go one of these days!
Cheers,
Stephen
Excellent captures Paul.
You can almost feel the power, especially in that last shot.

Thanks folks, it is fun, especially if there are not stars about. At least I still get to use some of my equipment

Nice shots Paul...you may have another chance tonight...the skies are looking horrible in Brisbane.

Yep I'm not even bothering to try to setup tonight Tony. Last night I dragged everything out to have another shot at McNaught only to pull it down once I had finished setting up :mad2: I'll just sit on the back verandah with my trusty 300D and a tripod. ;) It's already looking promising with the clouds getting above the hills to my south.

Paul, I did that last night too.. :) Set up everything, M102/C11, QHY8, autoguider, dew heaters, made cable looms for the setup, laptop... left it to cool down, came out about 20 mins later, and what had taken me over an hour and a half to set up took a max of 20mins to pull down before the skies opened up and dropped rain... Very frustrating.

Not bad at all. Hardest thing to do when trying to capture lightning is to get proper focus in the dark.

Nah not last night Jeanette. The storms skirted to the south of us. All we got was the cloud.
