Happy with your broadband???

I have Bogpond ADSL (512K) and since signing up around 18 months ago I have noticed the performance deteriorate to the point that for web browsing it's not that that much better than a fast dial up connection. For downloads etc it's fine. I have noticed that new ADSL installations go like a rocket but sometime down the track things just happen more slowly. I install DSL from time to time as part of my job and find it annoying that new installations of half the speed perform many times more quickly. It's not just my service, our DSL at work is the same, i.e. noticeably slower than when installed.

What's your experience???

aanet 256 k: 'eh :confused: Its a service. Nothing to write home about. Hard to tell really. I don't notice it much unless I'm checking out other sites. IceInspace pages are definately one of the slowest to load. Don't know if that has anything to do with my server or with the website.

I thought my ADSL started to slow but now I think it's in my head.

Installed Optus Broadband 1.5mbps, it was lightening fast until i updated to service pack 2 at micro$oft about 100mb downlad with all patches and critical updates, that blew my limit:doh:

Now have a snails pace 27.4 kbps:zzz:until the end of the month.

Have upgraded to 1.2 gig limit:cool: that should keep IIS pages loading in overdrive:thumbsup:

I should add that websites are getting larger/more complex over time also. The pictures are getting larger, there's Java and Flash which all take time to load and chew resourses.

One big problem that really does slow your browsing though is spyware. Even a quick visit to the wrong site and bingo, there's some nasty little trojan that's reporting back to base, getting into the registry, changing your browser settings and suddenly the computer is a snail. It's just recently that this has become a big problem. Worse than viruses imo and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of protection.

I believe the reason for slower connection over time is due to the rubish people load onto their compter's..that includes me...when ever I do a full format of my computer everything inluding the net works faster.

Im with Netspace and in general it performs well .

The exceptions are when they introduce plan changes and then all the file leechers churn across. Suddenly the network is bogged down, necessary upgrades lag demand and service goes to pot for about a month before they get their kit in order. This has happened twice in the last 18 months .

I'm on iinet 512, and it's been ok. I don't find IceInSpace particularly slower than any other site, but as Kevin said, sites these days have a lot more "content", more than just a page of HTML that's for sure.

Any integrated site with PHP or other that's reading from DB's and producing more information, is going to be a little slower. Some pages might have over 100k of information to display. You'd hope a lot of stuff is cached but that's not always the case.

As for the topic of the poll, I don't think mine is slower, but spyware can definitely have an impact.

Bogpond ADSL (512k) here.
The only noticable differance I've come across is the loading of pages on IIS since the upgrade. Otherwise everything else is the same.

Well, I got the 2gig line and it is very fast. Speed counts as far as I am concerned. BTW the 2 gig line make the 512 look like 56kb. Sorry, but for a little more money a month you can have amuch faster line. Check with Bigpond or your service provider as to what deals are available. They change all the time.

I've been on Optus cable for over a year now and it hasn't dropped out once. Download speeds are up to 1Gbyte/s, but more typically between 300 & 800kbyte/s from aarnet, where I get most of my big downloads from. Works perfectly with Linux, even though Optus support for Linux is non-existent, of course. Uses DHCP and the IP address is dynamic, which is good for security.

I noticed what seemed like a big increase going from 256k to 512k. But they arn't getting another cent out of me so I'll have to do with 512.

I'm on an iiNet ADSL2 account but too far from the exchange to get 12Mbit. I connect around 6 Mbit with 20 gigs of downloads a month, it's nice. I do concur with the comments above about the increasing complexity of web sites.

It's interesting that of the sites I generally frequent, the ones most noticably slow to load are the forums. I would put this down to the server software.

I have ADSL through iprimus 512K and the site loads as quick now as it always has. I never bring up one site at a time anyway. football365.com is first on my hit list then ebay.com.au then iceinspace.com.au then lufc.co.uk then..... you get the idea, but they all load really fast compared to my dial up when i had it.

Actually, there is one little proggy that is brilliant imho (brilliant because not only does it work a treat, it is also free!!). Called Spybot (http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html). Among other things, if a recalcitrant programme tries to change the registry in any way, spybot stops the attempt in its tracks, and asks the user if the change should go ahead.

Optus cable for just over 5 years now....rarely ever an issue but just a tad slower as more people are hooked up to the local node... Still easily get 5-900k sec downloads .. Once upon a time I could grab an mp3 every 5 seconds from a server at Melb Uni.... FAST !!

I will NEVER churn to another ISP...Its just too reliable and 'Always On'
