Scope on the Way

Hi guys, ordered a scope it is a 200mm 8" DOB, focal length=1200mm. :)
it's a saxon brand, (went to the batsc shop today chose the scope and will arrive wed/thurs and will pick up next sat, can't wait that long i am gonna burst)

cost $700, hope i made the right choice

Being my first scope ever i hope it will serve me well, and gives me "bang for buck".
You are right iceman i should and will go star parties and viewing nights, also have being encouraged to join a society to develop the hobby.

So v.v excited.

yup, as one noobie to another, you will gets years of enjoyment. some sort of tracking down the track and some imaging equipment, a couple of special eyepieces. yup lots of fun.

snake valley (star camp) is not far away, it will be a great time for researching what is good (asimov's collimation doctorate thesis) , what is bad (series 500 eyepieces).

I'd be curious about how the Synta/Saxon Dob compares with the more popular GS Dob... I know that the larger Syntas have Pyrex mirors, but even the biggest GS Dobs use only BK7...

Hmmm..I just had a look in batsc website. :scared2: Most prices are 'competitive' until you get to their ED eyepieces...$155-$165..

AOE sell these for $79 Who are they trying to kid!? I don't think I'll be doing any shopping there in a hurry! :whistle:

The BATSC website is a mess; probably long out of date. Giant bino prices are 2-3x Andrews/AOE's, which just can't be right. I rang BATSC once and the guy I spoke to was very helpful. I was ready to buy but he actually talked me out of making a purchase, explaining why the equipment might not be suitable for me. You've got to respect that kind of honesty. He was very patient and happy to discuss things in detail, so I wouldn't dismiss BATSC so quickly.

i saw a eyepiece 2" which would be nice, but the price almost floored me,
so you are right.

but batsc seem pretty good, i needed some to talk to and explain things face to face and help with in running and maintainence of my "precious"

While you are waiting, you should get down to the newsagents and buy all the telescope and astronomy mags on the shelf.:D

On second thoughts, all those pages with the scope adds might make waiting even worse:P

Congrats Turkish. An 8" is a good starting t'scope. FWIW, don't skimp on E/Pcs. Buy the best you can afford or wait till you have the dosh. The optics in the t'scope are good, so why ruin or degrade them with low quality E/Pcs??? Buy 'Plossl's' at least. Do you have a 'Planisphere' & a red LED torch yet? :D L.

hi guys, getting close to the new scope. got a planisphere but no red torch yet, and been looking at eyepiece prices, thats one area that isn't cheap.

batsc are really good, (website looks out of date) , but roger davies was v. helpful, also discouraged me from buying equipment, which didn't suit me, small store. York prices seemed v. high after doing research and evesdropping on the forum.

the 200mm club? you betcha :cool2:
