M17 Narrowband

Hello all
well, the weather has closed in once more, so I have had to curtail my data gathering for this image....having finished processing this, it turns out that I had enough anyway. So this is HAOIIISII data of 1.5, 5, 6 hours respectively.

12.5" RC, STL11K, AO-L guided, Astrodon NB filters (6nm).

Well done Martin. I haven't seen the HOS palette used for some time. Interesting as you obviously intended to go with SHO collecting so much SII data. This somewhat frustrates me with NB imaging...you've go to go deep with SII data as its much weaker than Ha and OIII. Really like the image. Perhaps a little too contrasty (personal taste), but that's what narrowband delivers - extremely rich detail. Thanks for sharing.

Incredible amount of detail apparent...

Am I right in assuming that due to the combining, anything in the image that is red is Ha spectrum, blues are OIII spectrum and Greens are SII?

And if so, that gives a fair indication of the nebula's chemical composition?

Looks utterly fantastic... Just wish I understood NB imaging better.

i can see this narrow band thing becoming quite popular. i saw one similar done by Bassnut recently, it really gives this object a 3 dimensional appearance,

Once you get as good as you are, we are allowed to be really picky....
2 things , it for me needs to be centred more to the left and lower it looks a little out of balance visually, and the blacks are really BLACK... me id like them just a little bit lighter. ive seen others and they have that similar look too, so it might be the done thing.

having said that the detail is wonderful, and better than i can do.

Well Martin...?....that's one awesome Swan mate!

The delicate detail visible throughout the tail feathers area is just beautiful and the inky black molecular clouds around the neck are fantastic.

By the way...err?...are you still moving to the US..? :prey:

Actually Clive, those blacks I think you are pointing out are actually molecular clouds and they "are" black. The dark clouds around the Swans neck are some of the darkest examples in the Milky Way too, like large blacker versions of the Bok Globules in the Lambda Centauri nebula.

Once again, thank you all for the great feedback I am glad you found the image so enjoyable.

my apologies for being slow to respond.....I posted the image yesterday, set up an all-night sequence, got up at 6am this morning to travel to Darwin for work all next week. In the hotel now and catching up.

I havent checked the data, but I hope to have bagged yet another 4 hours SII on the Helix nebula. The data is exceptionally weak at this wavelength, so I expect I am going to need about 40 hours or so.

Anyway, Mike, that decision is imminent, I mean in the next 2-3 weeks....I believe the job gets advertised next week, so fingers crossed.

But not to worry....already checked with CWAS and they will accept my entries next year.

If the CWAS 2008 entries are anything to go by, then we should all worry about the competition!

Alas, with SPSP, I think you have to be there to put your entries in....so assuming I am the successful candidate, I will have to pass on that.

I might be able to let the system do its thing over night, but the damn Cloud Sensor had me up a dozen times last night....I must automate the roof.
