Yay! Today I was given my first telescope from a family member. I posted recently about it been a saxon, turns out we got our wires crossed. Turns out it's a 144/900 Newtonian Reflector, from Ebay of all places. Was never used, so basically it's brand new :D

Now i know people say the Ebay ones are bad, but as this is my first scope i am really happy with it. The finderscope needs to be reaimed everytime i use it, but thats my own fault as i need to disassemble it time i finish with it.

First on the agenda will be to build a sturdy case to house it all. then turning my red dot scope into a more reliable finder.

It came with

K10mm and K25mm eye pieces
1.5x Erector
2x Barlow
Sun filter
moon filter
On an EQ1 mount i believe
6x30 finderscope.

No where near as flash as what most of you guys have, but i'm stoked with it :D

BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE SUN FILTER.
MANY TYPES THAT SCREW INTO EYE PIECES ARE DANGEROUS AND CAN BLIND YOU.

There are threads on this site that can advise you

Other than that have fun
It looks cool

I hope I'm wrong about the sun filter!

Nick,
congrats on the new telescope, if the 'sun filter' is not of the type the covers the entire objective of your scope (the open end that you point at stuff) throw in into the rubbish bin and read the warnings of the dangers of poor quality filters elsewhere on this forum.

Enjoy. regards,

Greg.

Yep, - looks like a great starting place.

But take what the guys have said about the solar filter seriously. You only get one chance with this sort of thing. Well, - two strictly speaking I suppose :P, - but you don't want to go down that path ;)

Cheers

That scope will be enough to get you hooked and wanting to go bigger. The aperature bug will be biting soon.
Have fun with it and let us know how you go with it and what you see.

Thanks Jen, looks like the next few days in vic are out of the question too. I guess it'll give me an excuse to hide in the shed and design a case for the thing.

hahaha, yeah its not going to be small obviously, want to hold everything, including the EQ mount in it plus room to add extras, and its going to be padded, so it'll take me a bit to get it just right before i even think of making it

That's great Nick... you're going to enjoy that.

And it sounds like you've encountered the first law of Astronomy... when you buy new equipment, the clouds roll in. ;)

Enjoy!
