Coming: The Day the Earth Stood Still

It appears that there is a remake of the '51 Sci-Fi classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still" about to hit at the end of the year. I just caught a trailer on Fox. The cast looks pretty good (I think K. Reeves has come a long way since Bill & Ted) and includes Kathy Bates, Jennifer Connelly and John Cleese. Reeves plays Klaatu. Should be interesting to see the new Gort too. The effects look quite stupendous, which you would expect of any modern sci-fi flick. The original is one of my favourite movies of all time, along wth other 1950's stablemates like Forbidden Planet.

I had not heard this news...I have mixed feelings about the re-make as I think the original is pretty special.

Although I do enjoy a good SciFi Flick almost anytime...

I am sure I will catch it on an airplane when it comes out.

I reckon you've already relegated it to "B-grade" in your head. ;) May not be fair... but we'll see when it hits...

This will be a Gold-Pass movie for me.

Nope, I did not mean to suggest B-grade...I see all of my movies on an airplane as I travel overseas a couple of times a month. :D

Other than an occassional family friendly flick (read for kids under 10 years old) a movie on the airplane is the only place I get to watch things I am interested in.

Know what you mean. However, I did the Sydney-LA-New York-LA-Sydney return trip every 4 weeks for 4 years. It's somewhere that I always saw repeats....

My wife will no doubt want to drooooool over Keanu some more and see it with me.

I also love the originals like Forbidden Planet and Earth vs The Flying Saucers etc.

I am a Sci-Fi addict from way back in my Childhood.

Hi All

I was facinated by the original movie when I was a kid. I remember watching in the days when they had movies on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

All I hope is that they don't go overboard with the special effects. Special Effects are great, but it becomes a bit much when they become the star of the show. I also hope that is isn't another one of these great hyped up movies that turn out the be nothing much at all but hype.

I will look forward to having a look.

I think you're right Paul. One thing that impressed me with the latest Cruise version of WOTW was that the effects were kept to a minimum. Nothing was done for "flash" value. I hope that this one is treated with the same respect.

One thing that ruins movies like this is the modern tendancy to inject humour where it isnt needed - ala Randy Quaid's character in "Independence Day". I hope they don't do that in this one because that sort of thing made ID a cheap joke.

One movie I'd like to see a remake off is a classic late 60's or early 70's Japanese movie called Mothra, does anyone remember this one?

I remember it as a kid as well, hope they don't spoil it. The Tom Cruise version of WOTW was awful, watched it, but was bored to tears by the end. Did the same to the Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy. Not anywhere near the original story.

LOL! I don't think that the WOTW remake and the HHGTTG movie were made in the same vein Bill.... one was kind of a "serious" sci-fi movie and the other a comedy. I actually liked WOTW. I agree with you about HH though - what a complete screw-up.

Looks cool, but whats all the yaya about Planet X and all that at the end of the trailer? Is that in the movie? Ive never seen the original so I don't know.:shrug:

But I could certainly handle just a little more enthusiasm when they're in the back of the taxi and the lead bloke is telling the dame to go to the spaceship and say (to gort) "Klatu Berada Nikto" The way she slowly fudges the phrase together, you'd think she'd been given one chance to repeat the Greek alphabet backwards :P

I have a feeling of cautious optimism about this one. The basic story line is so great that they'd have to do something pretty drastic to stuff it up.
Yes Ric, I do remember Mothra. Saw it on the big screen when I was a kid. Awesome! I'd have mixed feelings about a remake of it though. Remember what they did to Godzilla with their abominable remake:(

While the original movie was way before my time :whistle:, I really, really enjoyed it. I vaguely remember reading the original short story that the movie was based on (which had a very spooky plot twist that I don't think made it into the movie), but can't remember what it was called or who wrote it... anyone else know?

Couldn't help myself... after a bit of searching found not just the story and author (Farewell to the Master by Harry Bates), but the story itself (http://thenostalgialeague.com/olmag/bates.html).

You should read it... I'll be interested to see if the twist at the end of the story makes it to the new movie...
