Hello everyone,
I have received a few emails again this year, as I do every year, asking me about the Mars encounter. Check it out below.
Don't feel bad if you have already passed it on. To be sucked in by this email I suppose is forgivable....ONCE. Not everyone is an astro-geek like me.
This phenomenon is toatally UNTRUE and if anyone wants to ask me about it, I am happy to answer questions.
Can you imagine?......
If Mars was close enough to look as big as our moon to the naked eye, some catastrophic event would have had to have knocked Mars off its orbital path and sent it careening for Earth. Having another large gravitational mass such as Mars in close proximity to us, would wreck havoc with our atmosphere, weather, tides, magnetosphere etc. It would also affect our orbit around the Sun, which as you can probably imagine, is kind of JUST RIGHT where it is. We would have earthquakes, volcanoes, tidal waves, massive storms, possibly ice ages and maybe even cats and dogs living together in harmony. You know....MASS DESTRUCTION on a GLOBAL scale.
If you get the Mars email...ignore it.
By the way, the photograph used in the email below is not Mars, it is a moon of Saturn and those are the rings below as viewed from edge-on. Who-ever wrote it couldn't even tell the difference from a small rocky red planet half the size of Earth, to a whopping Gas Giant hundreds of times bigger than Earth with thousands of kilometers of ice rings around it. Looking at the pic, it might even be doctored as well...funny how the two moons seem to have a dent in the same place...I'll have to look into that one...
All vented now......:mad2:
Baz.
Two moons on 27th August
27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for.............
Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to thenaked eye. This willcultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles off earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons.
The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
