View Full Version here: : Shoemaker Levy 9 Remnants?

Hi All,

I have a question that I thought someone may be able to help with here.

While looking at a great shot by Lester here (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=34886), I noticed at the bottom band of Jupiter there are about 4 white spots that instantly reminded me of the spacing of the Shoemaker Levy 9 impact photographs of when the comet broke up and impacted with Jupiter a few years back.

Could these white patches be left over "holes" in the cloud layers from this event?

It may have already been asked and solved but I am curious.

Thanks in advance

Chris

Hmmm, two days with no reply? Must be a stupid question then!

Anyone have any idea here?

Chris

Hi Chris, i take it thats a stern "No-one knows" !
I have been looking at it, and i can safely say that the comet impacts would have happened lower down. If you check the pic against SL-9 images you'll notice that the latitude isn't high enough for the impact sites to be on the same lat. as the white spots. Note that white spots were also present on the SL-9 Impact images.

Hope this helps!
Cheers!

Hi Outbackmanyep,

Thanks for the link, it clearly shows the impacts with some existing white spots already there, so I guess this quite easily answers that question.

Thanks for the response!

Cheers

Chris
