After last nights dismal imaging session, I was determined to redeem myself... And redeem myself I have...

Here is my best Jupiter to date. This is the first AVI from tonight with Jupiter sitting at approx 61°

More to come!!

Alex.

Awesome image Alex, definitely your best.

Very well done.

Did you use your 5x Powermate?

Wow Alex,

That is SUPERB!!

I agree, best of the best so far. Especially with the 8" scope, that looks like it has the details of a 12" pic if you ask me.

You da man!, is that on EQ6 Ferrari or the G11 Bentley? It also looks like you crashed into an Orion truck too!

Thanks Matty.

Yep, that was with the 5x powermate. I'm currently processing an image with 50% bigger scale, that was taken with the 5x and a couple of extension tubes.. having a little trouble, but I'll sort it out! :D

Fantastic image!
The talents here in IIS never cease to amaze ...
well done Alex

ok...

One more with the 5x, this was a test avi taken earlier in the night just to test the settings/histogram etc.. turned out rather well..

The next one was with the 5x and 8cm extension tube, giving a rather massive image, with moderately good detail, but I dont know what the go is with that line on the planets edge... ??? (insert your suggestions here!!)

Cheers for the comments guys.. I must say I'm rather impressed with myself.

Well done, I like the first image the best.

Some superb images there Alex, well done!

I have no idea about that line on the larger image, I assume it isn't in your capture video at all. Where abouts in your processing does it first appear?

AlexN

Thanks mate,

The line becomes apparent after stacking. the more I process, the worse it gets... I've noticed however, the edge with the line gets VERY close to the edge of the FOV (parallel with the line) for about 300 of the 700 frame AVI...

I'll re-process it later, but delete any frame where its close to the edge... Mind you, that avi, jup only has maybe 30px either side of it... just squeezes into the FOV :D

Top images, Alex. Great result for an 8" and webcam.

Thanks Graeme.

I might add, I finally took the advice about getting a UV/IR filter for the webcam... These images and yesterdays HORRIBLE image were the first taken with the Baader UV/IR block in place... It sure does make focusing easier...

Hi Alex,

That is an awesome result for an 8 inch scope.
The line you are getting is almost definately because one of
the frames in your stack went near or touched the edge of the
FOV. I get them quite often.

Quite a good feeling isn't it to keep getting your personal best
change in a few nights :)?

I'm glad you took the advice to get the IR filter.
Focusing is sooooo much easier.

Keep them coming!.
Inspirational!

Alex,
Those are awesome. I guess a lot of nights your scope could outperform larger scopes depending on how wide the seeing columns are. Great job!!

Top shots Alex. The detail in the GRS is very nice indeed.

Great shot Alex.
I have wondered how much detail I might be able to achieve with an 8" Newt. I would be very happy with those results.

thanks guys. Oggie, i still think i can get more out of it, the seeing was above average but still far from perfect. I think however these shots show the potential of an 8 inch rather well.. Just imagine if the seeing was perfect, the collimation was spot on (which it wasnt) and i was using something better than a web cam ie. A dmk or dbk. There's no doubting that an 8 inch is up to the task of planetary imaging. Not in my mind.

If you don't mind me asking, how many years/pics have you been at it to get such quality out of your 8" Alex?

Beautiful pics - thanks for posting

ummm... I first took interest in astronomy in March this year... I bought my 8" early april...

Played with imaging with the 8" on the Dobsonian base untill last month when I bought my EQ6 pro...

Just checked my "completed images" folder, theres been 35 images... the first of which was a pitiful tiny little jupiter taken with the 8" on the Dobsonian base with the same webcam, no barlow... It hardly even resembled Jupiter....

5 months in astronomy, 4 months planetary imaging, 10 images a month or there abouts...

Im a pretty quick learner...

Thanks for your comments Rob...

heres a series, one shot from every month since I first started imaging jupiter... the quality took a GIANT leap when I got my EQ6.. and the ones already in this thread represent august :)

I am that beginner and I am dreaming right now!!
Alex, you have to be congratulated for your speedy progress. Only 5 months in astronomy! Wow that's incredible! 20 years in astronomy and yet to produce a Jupiter pics....But I will soon...hopefully:rolleyes:

Most impressive work Alex.
It is good to keep an archive, to look back on and see from whence you came.

Do you have a cooling system for your primary. It makes a considerable difference.

How do you focus?
A remote control focuser also makes a massive difference to the image quality.
