Truly about the most impressive piece of engineering ever built!

I think their server is having problems

Most firewalls would be configured to drop a ping, so it may still be OK.

It came up fine here
Im staggered to see what a huge undertaking it is. It has to be the most amazing machine ever built by humans.

I just hope the dont accidentally create a Strangelet (http://www.everything2.com/e2node/Strangelet)

Won't open for me either, but I must say that I have been a little concerned about this experiment and was thinking, imagine if something went wrong creating a black hole or something.

Thanks for the link Scott, very interesting.

Cheers Daniel.

opened straight away for me:D:D:P WOW, what a machine. Bet it would fry an egg real well. Who on Earth dreampt that one up?
I agree, must be the most complex machine ever built by mankind. Now all we need is for everyone to throw away their guns and put the money into more of that stuff and of course voyages to Moonie and Mars:)

Some pointless "facts" I've heard:

1. It will use more electricity daily than the entire US grid annually (unconfirmed)

2. Its main accelerator gun will produce such a high density of X-rays that if you were in the chamber you could actually see them (before you got rather instantly vapourised)

3. Its collisions produce more output per second than the Inquirer (hard to believe)

4. Micro black holes may be created - but this is happening all the time in nature, then tend to be unstable and evapourate in pica seconds (don't know under what physical model this all happens).

5. It takes about 4-6 weeks from start of cooling to reach operating temperature for the super conductors (liquid helium cooled to about 4 degrees above absolute zero)!

Wouldnt that be a marvelous place to photograph.. so many bright colors and interesting geometrics..
