What happenned with those couple of loonies who demanded the LHC be closed down because the mini black holes created would suck in the earth in a Hawkingesque nightmare ? I thought political correctness decreed that the more loony and minority the group , the more they are listened to :P on the assumption they must be underpriviledged !
I for one, am looking forward to some interesting discoveries, even if we all get sucked in to a singularity - at least we will all get together as one:lol::lol::lol:.

As it has been said before, high energy cosmic rays have more energy per particle that we can produce even in this new machine. The particles and the daughter products than can be studied under controlled conditions with very sophisticated detectors will give us insights into even smaller realms of subatomic processes.

It is your basic stupid non entity in the matters of any science that scream black holes and or the devil. It is sad really that this sort of crap journalism still persists.

So please do not help them!

Nature has a series of "special" stories on the LHC:

http://www.nature.com/news/specials/lhc/index.html

Not sure if access is available freely to the public for all of them but some should be...

Most of it goes over my head, but physics and the LHC fascinate me. Can't wait to see what results they find.

It would be funny if it wasn't so stupidly sad.

A cable at the LHC has melted putting it out of action for some months:

I agree entirely! The type of media attention that the LHC has been receiving only highlights that there is a general scientific ignorance in the community. I've noticed that people see science as a novelty (especially with human space exploration), or are completely scared of it (as is the case with the LHC) because they fear they will find science too confronting. Some people are yet to discover the joys of science (as I'm sure many of you have found) and learn that science is equally a passion as it is a discipline.

Classic! Even better would be if a media station broadcast it as one of their doomsday stories (...cough FOX News! cough...).
