That M8 in Mapped NB

Hi Guys

Im gunna milk the Ha I did previously for all its worth :D :P.

Here is the starless Ha I did in a previous M8 with SII and OIII I took last year as a NB image. Not as attractive as LRGB methinks, but worth trying never the less.

M17 Swan Nebula in Colour Mapped Narrowband
Ha:SII:Ha:OIII Ha 3nm Ha 10hrs; SII 80min; OIII 50min both bin2, Mapped as LRGB (Hubble pallet)
Taken on a Meade 12" LX200R OTA, G11, ST10XME, at f6.7 (Ha)

SII:OIII taken earlier with an ST8XME (scaled).

The nebula to the left was curved way down, it was just a sea of Green but NB artistic license allows this in NB, its just art ;). The gurus here will puke, but hell, others might have a squiz and chuckle, thats what its all about, fun :thumbsup:

interesting... its adds a bit more contrast to the delicate folds of the core which were harder to see in natural LRGB

Alex, yes it does, perhaps a little aggressive tho. More 3D effect, but a bit chunky, on a second look. Sigh, :shrug:

Yeah, its plausible Fred. There something about it that doesn't work. Its not uniform or something. I don't know. Let me ponder on it for a while... I think its the green in the top left which does not have any traces in other parts of the image. Perhaps a clipping mask job would give you more control. The Ha data would have been heavily weighted compared to the SII and OIII.

Yes Jase, the top left green is whats left after trying to kill it. There is a huge Hydrogen cloud there (green in the Hubble pallet) that is distingtly un photogenic in NB.

Very nice Fred, I always enjoy NB and the artistic licence that it offers.

I think this image brings out the intricate folds and twists even more so, there is also a definite 3D feel about it as well.

As you say it's the fun of the hobby which is what it is all about.

I just look at images like this and am gob smacked.
Really hope I dont get good enough at this hobby to find anything technically, politically, or other wrong with pictures like this, just let the visual take me to where it takes me.

You are the best Ive seen at this stuff Fred, and I would like to know how many hours of PC time are spent on images like this.

Jeff, The LRGB took all day ;-). Not that much is actually done on it, more making lots of small tweaks and testing. Just CCD stack took a few hrs before PS. The NB image took about 3 hrs (reused Ha).

Hi Fred,

Overall a stunner but as you point out the green is a bit of an odd thing and doesn't really fit.

Perhaps you can lasso it and do a local colour balance or something.
