Driving back from Darwin to Mackay, we had a few nights camping under the stars; simply brilliant, no trees, lights or intrusions. Unfortunately, it has miles nothing;)
1 Tanami Desert looking south west. Taken near Powell Ck station
2 Barkly Tableland looking east. Taken near Banka Banka.
3 Savannah part of the Barkly Tableland near Avon Downs, NT.

Wow were you there at night? I bet that would be a beautiful view with the milkyway overhead!

It was great going north as the moon had not risen. We just lay a tarp on the ground, sleeping bags on top and a pair of binoculars. Went to 'bed' as Jupiter was rising, and got up when Andromeda was rising.
Not too good on the way back due to the full moon.;)
Bugga!!! It was cold....5 deg C.

Andromeda through bino's from that location would have been stunning..

Shame I wasn't into astronomy when I lived in darwin... so many great places for it up and around the top end.

I was up there last week as well:)
Got back from Birdsville on Thursday Morning after five weeks on the road through Queensland and the Gulf and Darwin,Mt Isa and back to the Sunshine coast:)
Great trip:) took my 20cm scope but in most places we camped the trees got in the way, when there was no trees there was lots of Moon:(
Great trip:)

Wow! The Milky Way must be stunning at night with no Moon at that location.

Thanks for posting. :)

Great pictures! Reminds me of West Texas. Here's a picture showing some of Lubbock, Texas. No, I didn't take the picture. I've never been there....was born in Texas but it's a big state. Most all y'all's states are big I've noticed. lol. Not so in the USA.

When I moved to Florida...drove myself....discovered you can actually drive thru some states in an hour. I had never done that before. From the bottom of Texas to the top is about a 14 hour drive. I drove thru Louisiana in an hour, Mississippi in an hour and Alabama in an hour. Blew me away. lol.
