Jupiter 1st attempt

Hi Guys,

Tried my DBK 21 out on Jupiter. It's a bit red so i guess i need to experiment with the settings some more. I focussed with a Hartman mask, so do you guys think the focus is still soft?

Celestron NexStar 11 @ 2.7 meters
DBK21 + IC capture
Registax, 400 from 1000 frames.
PS2

It doesnt look bad for a first attempt. quite the opposite in fact.

Image scale is pretty small... are you using a barlow? if not, whack that 2x in there and go for a bigger image!

Which codec did you use when capturing?

No I tried at the native FL. I had the Powermate in and was trying to get the image on the chip when the clouds rolled in...

I am not sure about the codec. I think Matty said to use y800, so next time i will try this. Is that the right one or should I use another?

Also not sure about the 'squishyness'. What causes this and how can i get it in the right direction?

Hi Paul

The wrong codec can cause the wrong resolution to be used, resulting in the squishiness in the wrong direction.

Y800 is the right codec to use - I assume that's available for the DBK.

Actually check this post (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?p=278216&highlight=debayer#post278216) for some advice by turbo_pascale about the codec and registax.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys. When I get some time I will try
another Jup on Y800.

It's quite hard to focus as I dont want to slew after finding Jupiter to minimise any mirror shift. You cant focus on screen as jupiter is a big blobby mess. So I am using a hartman mask. I find the 3 images either side of focus and then take somewhere in the middle of that as best focus.

Anyway, its a learning experience and I would like to get a good Jup before going back to DSO's.

You'll find it easier to focus if you boost the brightness or gamma heaps. Jupiter will appear as a solid white disc when focused well, and as the focus goes out in either direction, it will both grow, and feather out towards the edges... so the central area of the disc will appear solid whit while the outer area will be progressively darker somewhat like a halo on stars in DSO images.

Once there is no halo around it you can safely assume you are focused :)
