From Nambucca Heads we had an evening of very good seeing on June 29. Here's an image of Ganymede and a reference image from the JPL Solar System Simulator:

Update: Replaced the old image with one from later in the session (1600UTC) when I recorded several minutes of red channel data.

great image scale and surface detail. perhaps better to say surface shading rather than detail.. but in comparison to the simulated image, it is very very close...

I am hoping you will submit that to Sky & Tel...it would have to be the first one they have ever had...and hopefully not the last! I can't believe such an image would ever be possible without mounting the scope on a tripod that is 1000km high!

Gee Anthony, that is one heck of a stunning image of the Galilean moon - as Mike said, nicely processed. This is really quite an astonishing achievement – well done!

Do you think you could get similar results with a large high end APO refractor (7 inch)?

What sort of focal length will you be imaging at, Greg?

Anthony uses a 13.1" scope with a 5x powermate + extensions, making it 13 or 14m focal length.

The camera he's using also allows him to take 40fps even at that focal length.

What camera would you be using?

Greg, as Mike suggests a lot of aperture is required for this, otherwise the image is just too dim. My 13.1" newt has about 3.5 times the light gathering ability of a 7" scope, it would be a real challenge to image ganymede at 14m focal length and 40fps with that amount of light.
