Hi

This is my first time posting to Ice in Space so I hope I am using the correct thread.
As you may tell from my log in name I am an Irishman living in Ireland. I have just been granted permanent residency in Australia and hope to move over in the next year (once I get a job:D). Not sure where my wife and I will move to yet-it depends where the work is I guess.
We haven't had a single clear night in months now in Ireland so I am hoping I can do a bit more astronomy down under-if my scopes survive the trip over.
I know some of your members post on our boards (IFAS.org). Some of Birds images have been posted on IFAS are they are just stunning. I hope to hopefully meet a few of you in the new year.

regards
john

Hi John

Welcome to IceInSpace! Ireland is a beautiful country, to be sure.. but you will certainly love Australia and our Southern Skies.

I hope you enjoy it here at IIS!

G'day John :hi:Welcome to IIS and welcome to Australia(whenever you arrive:lol:)
There's plenty of work and lots of clear dark skies in Alice Springs.(You soon learn to tolerate the heat, the cold, the dust and the flies.)

Thanks for the warm welcome.
I am looking out my window while writing this and sure enough, it is raining outside:(
Liz, my main scopes are a Celestron C11 on a CGE mount and an old meade 2080B (which I originally bought in Brisbane;)). An 80mm orion short tube and some binoculars complete my arsenal.
I recently bought a DMK 21 colour camera for planetary work (especially after seeing some of Bird /Mike Salways amazing images). Damien Peach will be at our "Whirlpool starparty" this September in Birr, County Offaly which I am helping to organise. I will be sure to pass on any tips I can learn from him.
My wife and I will be visiting Australia in October for a holiday and to look for work.

Hi John,
We look forward to seeing more of you online.
What sort of work are you looking for? If it's not too rude to ask.

When we visited Ireland a couple of years ago the Birr scope was on the 'must see' list. When we arrived at Birr Castle we found we had missed the starparty by a week. If we had known earlier we would have changed our plans and attended. As it was we spend a marvelous afternoon looking through the museum, photographing the scope from every possible angle and touring the grounds. It looks as though being a Lord is great work if you can get it! ;)

We had a great time in Ireland. It is obviously very different to Oz but both are very pretty in their own ways. Everyone was very friendly, though a few did want to souvenir my Akubra .
