In the classic series it would have to be Sarah Jane closely followed by Lela the amazon women.

In the new series I can't pick between Rose and Martha they have both been very good.

I was always keen on Romana, either the Mary Tamm incarnation or the Lalla Ward version. Both were outer worldly and highly intelligent and both managed to match wits with the Doctor.
Leela was another favorite too. Savage and fiercely independent she also was possessed of an inate intelligence and was more than up to surviving in the Doctor's world. And who can forget that skimpy little leather dress she wore?
Interestingly, SFX Magazine recently conducted an identical poll of companions and Sarah Jane Smith soundly trounced all pretenders to the throne. Well done, Miss Smith!
