Tom Baker was my favourite.
I didn't realize until afterwards that I could choose two. My second choice would have been Peter Davidson. Only because he was the best looking Doctor of the series.

I can't choose .... they were all great (except that yank Doctor Who .... just did not work .... what were they thinking ?)
I've seen them all , grew up on liberal doses of Doctor (every day before tea on ABC) right through 60s, 70s and into the 80s.
I like the two new chaps we've had so far too.

I worked in a pub in london next to the BBC rehearsal studios in east acton in '78. Tom Baker used to come in every lunch time and get right into it, shouting drinks regularly. He was a really nice bloke and was popular with the cast, perhaps that showed in his popularity in the show.

I voted William Hartnell for nailing the part so completely in the beginning and creating a truly iconic and mysterious figure. Watch him in the pilot episode - sheer brilliance!
I voted Pat Troughton second because he proved that the Doctor could successfully regenerate in a new body with a totally different persona and yet still remain quintessentially the Doctor, thus starting a tradition of regenerating Doctors down to the present.
Otherwise I would have just ticked all the boxes.
Splendid chap, all of them.
Tom Baker was my first choice, but I had to think for the second. I chose Peter Davidson in the end. I always thought the stick of celery in the button hole was so quirky.

If I had a 3rd vote I'd vote for Sylvester Mc Coy for the simple reason that no one else has yet. I thought his Doctor was heading into really interesting realms just before the show was cancelled:(

Had to vote for Tom Baker as my first choice, second was a bit harder, but went with John Pertwee. The last two names I don't remember, sort of lost interest after Tom.

A little bit off topic.
When they were casting for the new series of Dr Who, they were thinking of using Alan Davies from "Jonathan Creek" as The Doctor. Mainly because he looks very similar to Tom Baker with his curly long hair.
He would have been a good Doctor.

I like Tennant, the current doctor. The most recent episode shows him regenerating in the final scene. I hadn't heard that the part had been recast. Stay tuned for next weeks download, the final episode for season 4.

I liked all of them. Each brought there own character to it, giving the whole notion of Regeneration something tangible. I am not sure why the 9th and 10th Doctors are not inlucded in the list. I think they have really done a great job to bring the old series to life again after many years. The new series has also created a whole new generation of viewers, who perhaps may not be such big fans of the older reruns.
Looks like we might be getting a new doctor, going by the latest Stolen Earth episode. But I hope David sticks around, I like what he has done so far. I would like to see a Doctor that hang around for quiet a while like Tom did. But then again the producers might feel that a long stayer would upset more people when he leaves, be to much of a change to keep the audience coming back.

What about Peter Cushing?
I have seen all episodes (some recreations) from the very first one through to the start of Peter Davidson's series. And I think the original Doctor was very good. Perhaps Tom is remembered more because he was around longest. I am slowly working my way through the entire series. As during my younger days I only saw mostly Tom's work.

Hi all, the poll specifically refers to the Dr's from the classic TV series, I delibrately stayed away from current (different format, glitz, different Tardas internally etc and the movie Dr's.

Actually Trevor that's not quite correct, Paul McGann wasn't part of the classic series, he played the Doctor in that not-so-good American Doctor Who movie. I really had wondered why he had been included in the poll to be honest, since the new series hadn't been included.

Thats fine I picked the names up from the BBC website I wasn't sure about McGann in the first place, I actually don't remember ever seeing anything with him in it but as it was on their list I included him.

But there was a regeneration sequence from Sylvester Mccoy to Paul Mcgann in the movie. Hence as per the BBC site and the Main Doctor Who wiki Paul is the official 8th doctor. While no such sequence was shown from Paul to Christopher in the new series.

So far good old Tom Baker is a clear winner, what's he doing these days??
Hi Trevor, he was doing the voice over for "Little Britain" which was classic stuff indeed.
Not sure what he's been doing lately though.
Cheers
