Gum Nebula & Vela SNR wide angle view

Hi all
Reprocessed an image of this area from last season when I borrowed Houghys new cooled DSLR 350D to try some narrowband imaging of sorts
Shot with standard Canon 50mm f1.8 lens wide open, so significant distortions. Image is made up of:
3x15 mins shot through Baader 7Nm Ha filter
3x15 mins through Baader Narrowband O3 filter
Combined manually in Photoshop by assigning the HA to the red channel, and the O3 to green and blue channels.
I was happy enough to get the spiderweb like tendrils of the Vela SNR. Was just an experiment to see what I could get with his cooled DSLR and relatively short total exposure times. If Id stopped the lens down to F4.5 or so and gone many hours it would have looked much better

that would be the same camera that photon collector used to do the same area a little while ago?

I did take the image set some time ago now, but the first process didnt show as much detail. I wish Astronomik or some other mob would hurry up and bring out that multi emissionline filter, essentially a HA, O3 and S2 filter in one, designed for one shot colour cameras and DSLr's

Nice work on the Vela SNR Scott. I like what the OIII has done. Not sure about field flatness though. Well done.

Might be noisy and show abberations but boy its still very nice!

Yeah stopping down 2 stops at least doesn't add that much time and does significantly reduce optical distortions. This is true of almost all camera lenses.

One way is to take a short test image to see if the distortions are more under control.

I like the image and am a big fan of this area having imaged a lot of it myself. Great you got the tendrils.

This object is primarily an O111 object rather than a Ha object.

The Nikon 50mm F1.8 doesn't show virtually any distortions wide open so its also the lens.

The lens works well when down to F4 or so I find. One hassle I do have with it is dewing. Will need a dew heater for all night work with it
