M83 in Ha

Hi all, heres one I took befor all the cloud settled in. It started of as a test of some different settings but actually turned out quite well in the end.

This one is a stack of 75 x 21 second images taken with the DSI II Pro using Envisage, stacked in DSS and tweaked in MaximDL.

Picked up some nice data there Ric with the DSI II a lift in curves will bring out some more detail

That is a remarkably detailed and deep image of M83 for H alpha and those capture settings, very impressive indeed.

This is really interesting. I took a similar series, longer exposures but equivalent stack time a couple of months ago on my DSI II pro in Luminance only. I had no where near the detail you captured in the spirals however my field stars had less of the distinctive DSI 'blotching'. I must try some Ha on a few galaxy shots. Very nicely done!

Hi Dennis, thanks for your comments. As I was imaging in Alt/Az I have to stay below 30 seconds to avoid star trailing. I am looking forward to reimaging this one with longer exposures in polar mode and seeing what the little DSI can really do.



I tried to lighten it a bit more but it seemed to wash it out.



Hi winensky, I find imaging in Ha reduces the DSI blotching significantly.

Hi Narayan, I have read that it is difficult to image galaxies in Ha but it didn't seem a real problem. I haven't tried fainter galaxies as I suspect their may be difficulties there with short exposures in Alt/Az as well as their surface brightness.
I think with the brighter galaxies there shouldn't be a problem.

Looks great Ric, really brings out the knotty bits of the arms.:) Just out of interest can you run a couple of other filters and combine as a pseudo (narrow band) RGB colour view?

Thanks guys, next time I get a chance I shall revisit M83 and do the full narrowband and luminescence on this one. I am quite interested to see how it will turn out. Probably in the next moonless period.
