Even spending $1000 on a Nagler, a total of around $3000 for a 16" with excellent EP is great Value!!
Even if I did get the 16" I'd stick with the EP's I've got. $3000 is far too much for me.

ohh geez... it'd be huge... does anyone else make a solid tube dob of that size? it'd be almost too hard to lug around? is it gonna be a solid tube dob? a step ladder would probably be in order.

Did he say if it was going to be solid tube or truss? With that low price I say solid tube...but probably with a split tube design. The 12" was going to be a spilt tube but for some strange reason they went the solid tube way. Good thing I have not put any money down for a 10" or 12"....but then again no big dob is going to fit in my 3rd storey apartment balcony :)
Darren
Wow, a 1.92 m focal length. It's going to be a big bugger. It's impressive that there isn't much of a price rise per area compared to the 12". Area increase is x1.78 and price increase is around (due to uncertain price) x1.82.

If you live on the top floor the solution is simple :D
The early rumours were for a truss dob. I can visualise a whole lot of people drouling in anticipation waiting for the first brave ones to buy theirs and report back.
I might be one of them :D
At f4.8 im wishing it was a 14 inch instead of a 16 as its going to need a step ladder or similar to reach eyepiece height at zenith.

Steve,
There is not much to say on the topic except "Oh, that's good news!" as no-one knows anything about them yet. We are just filling up a thread that cannot really be added to anymore at a serious level.
Once we know some specs or technical data the thread will take off with good input.
Thank you for letting us know about the news but what else can really be said?
Sorry if we stuffed up your thread but  but what else do you want us to say?

I have just googled everywhere and nothing is available. Not even in the GS site.
Actually the GS site is fairly useless. It doesn't even list all of it's own models. There are only 2 dobs in their own site!!!!
Have a look http://www.gs-telescope.com/

That GS site is useless though. You would think that a company would want to advertise their products!!!
They have hardly anything in any page.

No worries guys, I really don't mind the clowns! When I was posting the first message I was thinking whether it should go in General Chat or Equipments.
I said to myself, this really belongs in Equipment, but then again if it gets a lot of nutty responses, then the moderators are liable to shoot it down. :confuse3:
Then I thought: surely iceinspace has come of age; its members are mature, well-mannered folk, who pursue the nobler things in life, like astronomy, the arts and sciences, and are more than happy to engage in the occasional intellectual discourse. :innocent: Surely they would not resort to cheap jokes in the absence of anything useful to add to the discussion.
:lol2:
Actually the sort of responses I would have liked to see might go something like this:
"Don't bother waiting for the GSO Dob. You can build a high quality 18" truss Dob for under $2000. This is how: step 1 ..., step 2 ..., step 3..." :prey:

Steve, seeing as you seem to be taking our attempts at humour as some sort of personal attack - I apologise. Those thousand monkeys with typewriters actually seem to also write 99% of the TV programs/advertising/newspapers/magazines that we see as well as creating the internet as well. btw that quote was originally made by someone who didnt like the internet i would think, giving everyday joes a chance to have a voice ect. I thought this was Ice in Space forums - not the NASA or some university or other forums. Also I don't understand your alarm- every time someone posts to your thread it gets bumped up in the headlines creating more publicity for this oh so very serious thread - any publicity is good publicity as they say. One mans monkey business is another mans humour - and as Rupert Murdoch says, todays news is tomorrows fish and chip wrapping. I am sorry the necessary level of intellectual stimulation was compromised. Humour is vital part of my day, and also a vital part of myself and my friends approach to AMATEUR astronomy.
Yours in all seriousness

Wow, Kearn! Sorry, you got me all wrong. I guess the attempted humour + sarcasm in my previous post did not come through clearly enough. I thought the big LOL character at the end of the paragraph would have been enough of a clue. Sorry, if anyone else took my post the wrong way. I actually googled for a :pompous: emoticon to link in place of the :innocent: in my last post (just to make the tone absolutely clear) but could not find any.
Edit: The "thousand monkeys" comment was meant to be joke. Sorry if I offended anyone.
Edit 2: I do not expect that anyone can build a usable 18" Dob for under $2000, so that was another feeble attempt at a joke.
PS. Kearn, you're not trolling me, are you?
fringe_dweller
05-08-2005, 12:15 PM
Yes I noticed the emoticons - but I also noticed the possible implication or insinuation that we or i was a "monkey" "clown" and a "nut" and now "troll" possibly - i havent seen anyone calling you names? I had to look up trolling - LOL - believe me, my original posts were not deeply thought out attempts at social engineering - just of the cuff remarks.
I have a deep aversion to stuffiness sometimes - that is my only crime

Actually, I'm sorry about coming in late last night with my 'curried peanut' joke, or whatever, but I did think that janos would take it in reasonable spirit, so I say to you Steve, I applaud you for taking it in the fashion that it was intended..just a bit of fun to relieve some tension. We aussies need to vent with a few quips/sarcasm/totally stupid statements at times, at least I do! Just to break the monotony from being serious for days on end. As fringe_dweller said, humor is a vital part of his day...it's a NECESSITY for me as well. And now, I'm going to the movies...lol Over at david pretorius's thread, to watch some DSO movies! Sorry again, everyone. I did not mean to offend anyone, and I certainly did not for a moment take any of your jokes as personal attacks.
My message about the "well-mannered", "mature" members and "intellectual discourses" was 100% sarcasm. I was trying to join the "clowns", and crack a joke (and nothing more), but failed miserably. Sorry.
My monkeys & clowns comments were meant to be in the tone of the "welcome to the nuthouse" greeting often used by others to greet new members; just a light hearted joke, not anything sinister like childish name-calling.
And clowns are great. The experts like Ken keep me coming back much more often than I otherwise would. I wish I had half his clowning skills.
And sorry to Kearn for the trolling question; it was just in case, to preempt any possible 'gotya's.
PS. Geez, you know you're in trouble when you have to explain yourself. :ashamed:

I'm sure it would have to be a collapsable/retractable/dissassemble style OTA.
Otherwise it won't be appetising to the average amatuer. My 12" is big enough but a 16" would be almost impossible to carry or transport in one peice.
A rigid Tube OTA would only cater to those with a permanent location (observatory or shed) hence reducing demand.
Mind you, I'd still like to have one. I'd carry it if I had to.
I estimate that with a 16" objective, the OTA will be a minimum of 18" diameter!!! :scared2:
asimov
05-08-2005, 11:06 PM
I would estimate..(or so I've read) That the correct size tube for given primary size is 2" clearance each side. In other words, a 16" primary should have a tube diameter of 20" For tube current problems..

Hiya all, Quoting from my 'old' Meade cataldog, the 16" DOB specs are as follows, 16" Pyrex mirror, Tube Diam. = 19", spiral wound Sonotube, Length = 66", f4.5, fl = 1830 mm, Resolving power = 0.28 A/Sec, Limiting Visual Mag = 15.6, Photographic mag = 18.1, (not sure about that), Max mag = 600 X, 2ndary Mirror minor axis = 4.00", DOB Base diam = 33.6", Total weight = 170 lbs.
One of our members had one a few years ago. WOW, the views were just great! (but, he had a Holden 1 ton T/top at the time).
If the new GS Dob is anything like this, then you will definitely need a large vehicle to transport it for sure! :D L.

Actually, a car roof mount would be better and easy to make. As long as you can lift it onto the roof on your own! That would work no matter how small your car is.
