Hi everyone, I am new to astronomy and have recently bought my first scope. With all the different types out there it has been a fast learning curve for me. I found the articles and forums here soooo helpful.
I bought an 8" dob and so glad I did. It's great for now and maybe later I will look into something for photography so I will have plenty questions in the future I'm sure.
Also I'm in New Zealand so it would be good to hear from anyone local
:)

Hi Gary!
:welcome: to IceInSpace.
You made a great choice with the 8" dob.. years of enjoyment ahead! Make sure you learn how to collimate and don't forget to keep asking questions!

Good choice on the 8" dob  You will get good views and it's easy to pick up and cart around.
Cheers Daniel.

Thanks all for the welcome and vote of confidence on the dob.
Daniel
You are right. I have good views of the moon and Jupiter so far. Now the skies are darker but the weather is worse so I haven't had a chance to see much more.
The dob is lighter than i thought it would be too.:)

Haven't tried to collimate it yet so hope it works out in practice like the theory.

I suppose there aren't many NZers here because they are all aussie citizens by now:lol:

Have a look here http://www.iceinspace.com.au/plot/world.php (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/../plot/world.php) each red dot is a member who has supplied lat and long details. Seems to be few in NZ, click a dot it takes you you the members profile page, you can then contact directly using a PM (IIS private message).

Being a fan of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, I keep looking at this thread and thinking "And thanks for the fish" :)

Hi,
Welcome to IceInSpace. Great choice for a first scope. You can see so much with an 8" apeture. I've been happy with my 8" for about a decade now!
Have fun,
Doug
