Hello all,
Just letting you know that there will be a major astronomical discovery announcement made worldwide overnight tonight . . . specifically, at 3:00am Sydney time. The news cannot be announced before that, as it is under embargo.
I'll have the story on www.spaceinfo.com.au (http://www.spaceinfo.com.au) from 3:00am, and no doubt it will be everywhere else too.

Another exo planet discovery maybe? Maybe an earth-like one?
Like Steve, I hope it's more exciting than last weeks NASA announcement.

I hope I haven't raised everyone's expectations too high!
No, it's not little green men. It's not a new planet. It's very interesting scientifically, something that hasn't quite been seen ever before. But I suppose it might not thrill everyone.

I guess my other post was inappropriate
Pretty amazing stuff. So if that galaxy is 90 million light years away does that mean the event took place 90 million years ago when dinosaurs ruled the Earth?

Observation, in real time, of the X-ray outburst from a Type Ibc supernova in NGC 2770. Yep, that's pretty major.

Here's how it was reported in the 'mainstream' media up here in Qld.

Nice challenge at Mag 16. I'd be happy to give it a go if the moon would go away and someone would remove a couple of trees I haven't gotten around to yet. ;)
That is pretty amazing and very lucky to capture a SN in real time.
Congratulations to the team that found, they should also go out and buy some lottery tickets.
Cheers

Without wanting to be too much of a Philistine, I'd only stay up for a 3am announcement if it were the discovery of aliens, or maybe an Earth-like planet. Otherwise it can wait to the next morning.

A Very cool discovery.
Amazing that it has been kept quite for so long, a pretty tight code of silence on the part of the professional Astronomers !
