M7 could be seen with naked eye along with most of the milky way.
Jupiters bands were very clear even with 25mm

Had a go to try and find uranus, but beed to be a bit better with stars in the east.

Took some video of jupiter with toucam as the prime focus. No barlow. Very bright, might have to get some filters. At least the focus is better. Pointed the toucam at M7 and found that the stars are very close in the prime focus. Will invest in an eyepiece projection adapter, so i can film what the eye is seeing.

Just watched the jupiter vid. You may have to experiment with the camera settings, it seems? Do you know what a hartmann mask is? They are particularly good for medium size reflectors. For bright objects such as jupiter,(visual use) they work wonders. To use a mask with a camera such as your's...I would'nt know if it was a good idea or not........apart from being able to achieve better focus apparently.

David, there's nothing wrong with your video, except Jupiter is overexposed. You need to play with the shutter settings, you've probably got it at 1/25s or something? Try 1/33 or 1/50, or even at 1/100s when you're not using a barlow. The amount of light incoming is overexposing Jupiter. Drop the shutter to one of the suggested settings above, and you'll start to make out the bands on Jupiter in your video.

Also, is there a reason you're converting it to wmv? To process it in registax, you need to leave it as an avi. Once you start seeing bands on your raw video, upload the avi and i'll process it for you.

One more thing, is that the resolution you're recording at? It looks like 320x200. You should be recording at 640x480, which you change in some settings under the Video menu. What program are you using to capture?

thanks mike. the original .avi movie I am keeping on my harddisk, but i am shrinking and converting a copy to wmv and putting on my website for fellow forum users to view. I don't think I am allowed to upload .avi to IIS.

Also i am using the .avi to process in registrax and i have been changing to 640 X 480.

Mike "Sir fix up the noobie problems a lot" suggested slower shutter settings.

I have been using all auto settings that are on the toucam video capture program.

If it is another nice night tonight will have another go at slower shutter speeds.

I won't be up as late tonight. Having got out there at 8pm. with a couple of hour break to watch the f1 cars at around 11pm, i got to bed around 5am.

Paying for it now, but it was worth it.

The asimov WOW factor was at a nine out of 10 when i found some clusters without using the star map.

You will see a huge difference once you take it off auto and change the shutter speed and gain settings.

Not slower, faster :) 1/50s as opposed to 1/25s.

I'd suggest using "k3ccdtools version 1" as your capture program for planetary/lunar, and desire (or whatever you use) for long exposure stuff. What you need to be able to control is the shutter speed, gain, frame rate, brightness, contrast.

Turn off auto, and if you get access to play with those controls, then use whatever you like, but change the shutter to 1/50s or faster, gain at 0, brightness default, and contrast 0.

You'll see it immediately when the settings are right, the belts will pop right out.
