:mad2: Architecture
should be about great design not putting a big arsed light on top of a concrete box
and calling it "iconic ".

This really sucks.
There used to be this thing at Expo '88 called the sky needle. It was subsequently purchased by a famous local hairdresser (Stefan) and kept operating for years.
It used to send this really annoying beam across the sky every minute or so. I'm so glad he's turned the bloody thing off in recent years. I'd forgetten about it until this.
Take care,
Doug

I just wrote to the Premier about this:
Dear Anna,
I am very concerned to hear about a new hotel development "Trilogy" proposed for the Brisbane CBD.
According to this article in the Courier Mail:
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,23675270-3102,00.html
the building will include a "massive lantern":
"Trilogy will have a massive lantern incorporated into the design, which will light up the night sky over the CBD and make it one of the city's most recognisable buildings."
This brings to mind "Stefan's Sky Needle" which bathed the night skies of Brisbane in a beam of light every few minutes for about a decade.
In this age of environmental awareness, why is it still considered acceptable to waste vast amounts of energy shining bright lights into the sky? This harms the view of the night sky for all and has a serious negative impact on the activities of amateur and professional astronomers in the greater Brisbane area.
Light pollution is not only an eyesore as people cannot appreciate the true beauty of the night sky: it is a waste of energy that contributes to carbon dioxide emissions.
What is the Queensland Government doing to combat this serious and environmentally destructive form of pollution?
Best regards,
Doug Edwards

We have a premier telling us to save electricity , andf they are bragging about lighting up the night sky:screwy:
He didn't turn the thing of, it went on fire:):)
Ron
Onya Doug.
Have you thought of forwarding that email to any/all enviro groups?
They'll appreciate having something concrete like that to take the govt to task over:thumbsup:
Gee...how many weeks ago was it that they were all banging on about how important Earth Hour is and encouraging us all to make a difference? Anna's always spruiking her own green sensibilities...and those of her govt.
Hold 'em accountable.

Hmm, I thought I heard something last week about refurbishing this with 40 or so lasers. You didn't hear it from me

It is pretty amusing the lengths that some people/corporations with absolutely no talent will stoop to in order to attract attention.
Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing footage of Stefan standing next to the sky needle on fire a couple of years ago on the news.
I did consider sending it more widely but decided to let Anna respond first. I know for a fact that she takes pride in making sure everyone gets a response. This has been her attitude the whole time she's been in the parliament.
If it wasn't so serious, the hyprocracy of governments would be laughable.
The size of the ego on some people beggars belief.

I have just replied to Courier Mail. I dont have to spell out on this forum what I thought:mad2: It is a disgrace and the turkey who came up with that idea should be sacked. Let's have everyone on this forum writing to them

I have just had my letter published - for what it's worth. Maybe someone will take notice if enough people put in their opinion. So folks, have your say:D

I dont even know why you guys are suprised. I have no faith in this country at all. As far as I am concerned the sooner QLD breaks off and floats towards antarctica the better :p or maybe we should all ship off the newzeland and leave all of the gullible hippy do gooders here with the stupid politicians. I mean...2 something billion dollars towards 'renewable energy' what happens when they find out it doesnt actually exist!!! tehehhee. (dont get me wrong, i have nothing against worthwhile causes, like cutting emissions for nothing other than the safety and protection of our world) My sim city was better organised on my last save :D
may i aslo add, that if a scientist came up with 'renewable energy' it wouldnt be allowed out, because imagine what would happen to the precious oil prices! not to mention everything else, and if America succeeds in putting solar panels into orbit, then they will sell the energy to the rest of the world at a huge price, or somehow manage to tax or restrict anyone else from doing the same...but hey it works in theory...kindof like democracy

Just so long as you don't get caught, but if they go ahead with the "lantern", it doesn't take much to fashion a really good slingshot out of spring steel and large rubber bands. Then all you need is some 1/2" steel ball bearings. One well placed shot every now and then should deter them from ever lighting the damn thing:eyepop::lol::P:P

hahahha I can vouch for that method... there may hae been an incident involving an insistant neighboring church and a gigantic neon cross. Im telling you, they just replace it :p but it would be in my best interest to avoid dying anytime soon teheheh

Yeah, but giant neon tubes cost far more than 1/2" steel ball bearings, which you can get from a rubbish tip or car/truck wreckers:D
I know who'll give up the quickest:D
