View Full Version here: : Why not autoguide via the RealView image from the DSLR on the lappy ?

I'm surprised that there seems to me no way (at present) to directly utilise DSLR "realviews" (if displayed on the laptop) to impliment autoguiding , thus doing away with the need to buy a separate autoguider.

Maybe someone is doing this already and there is software and a hardware kit that allows you to this. Maybe I've not looked hard enough ?

Sounds like a nifty honours research project for someone doing their BE in electrical or computer engineering perhaps .... :D....

Hi,

I dont understand how this would be possible as it would have to read the CMOS sensor every couple of seconds and so how would you ever take a long exposure image?

Oh well. Scrub that idea then ....

Gotta ask dumb questions to learn knew things.

Nothing dumb about it, and really it probably can be done.
Starlight Xpress do it with some of their cameras. Half the pixels record, and half guide, then they swap about and the other half does what it hasn't already done, or something like that. Bear in mind I know nothing about electrics, except don't touch the electric fence!!!
