DMK Jupiter - May 9 Brisbane - 1610UT

Managed to get some RGB practice this morning:D

Quite happy with the amount of detail in these, despite the continuing presence of a roaring jetstream over most of Queensland.

I've included native and resampled image scales.

I've also included a ToUcam image from around the same time, just for a comparison. Keep in mind the ToUcam image was captured using a 3x barlow...the DMK's were done with the 2.5x Powermate...hence the varied image scales.:)

It helps me to have them side by side, to gauge how well I'm going in terms of colour balance. I also just think the comparison makes for interesting viewing.

I'm still struggling a bit with getting the colour balance right in the DMK RGB images.

I think they look a little 'cool' compared to the warmer tones of the ToUcam.

Possibly too much blue in one or more channels...or something:shrug:

Plenty more experimenting to be done. That's the fun of it.

By the way - you've produced some terrific images lately.

Very interesting to see the comparison. You always manage to get so much detail even in poor conditions.

Out of interest, do you use an IR cutoff filter with your ToUcam?

Hi Doug. Yes, I use the Baader UV/IR cut filter with my ToUcam. I never take it off.



Hi Rob - I don't use an extension tube with any of my barlows/Powermates. I've been thinking of getting one, though.

Although I'm not sure I really need one since I own a 2.5x Powermate, 3x barlow and 4x Powermate.

I can't use one with the 2.5x because that will actually diminish image scale, according to the Televue website.



Mike - Do you carry out any individual colour channel adjustment?

I'm assuming that's done in the Channel Mixer in PS?

Hi Matt,

I use to have trouble with colour balance, until I copied some of the good images taken by the top planetary images to use as a colour guide. Then I just get them up next to mine and alter my colour to match. Helps get rid of the guess work.

Believe it or not...that's actually what I've been doing, using other images to act as a guide.

But I'm still having a bit of a time getting my colour balance to where I want it. I'm still a bit 'green' (excuse the pun) when it comes to Photoshop.

Ah well...it's still early days and I feel like I'm making small improvements. And that's what it's all about...and I'm having fun:)

top stuff matt....make sure you keep track of your recording times. The hubble is about to start it imaging run (5am) of jupiter.
