Adjustable Observing Table

This was mentioned on an American astronomy forum.
It is an Australian idea of course.
The cheapest adjustable observing table you could get...
An old ironing board. You can have it at waist height, thigh high, or lower it to only a foot off the ground.
It is such a simple idea.
You can pick up a 2nd hand one for about $5-$10 at the Op shop.

Do you think it would be strong enough to convert into a chair?
I'm too scared to try sitting on it, wonder if I could get hubby to be the crash test dummy.

The only problem is that they are not very stable when knocked. Ouch there goes the nagler :doh:

Can't think of any reason why a handy-man could'nt add strengthening bars/struts/gussets or what have you to it, to make it more sturdy?

Bunnings have aluminium adjustable workbenches for around $60 which would make excellent comination table/stool, especially since the legs are individually adjustable for uneven ground.

yes phil i saw those i thought those would be rather a long and a nuicance to move ? for my dobbie anyhoo ?maybe for a chair or table on its own i wouldnt use it for a combination table and chair (if you use it for both and you happen to tip it bye bye gear ?) imho :)

Not strong enough to sit on, Jeanette. Try an old office 'gas lift type' chair. What's wrong with the simple old fold-up 'picinic' type table, Booboo? :poke: :rofl: :D L.

I guess you could knock a bit off each end of the ironing board with an angle grinder to make it more stable then cover the rough edges with some 10x10mm angle. File the corners, give it a lick of paint and it would look OK. Besides, who's going to see it in the dark?
