View Full Version here: : DMK Jupiter - Brisbane - May 6
Conditions a little worse than 24 hours before, but still some useful data and am happy to be getting more practice with RGB imaging and the DMK mono camera.
I think the colour balance in this one is better than my effort of yesterday morning?
Sadly the transparency let me down, with lots of dew and thin high cloud.
I also had a go with the 3x barlow, just to see how it performed and combined, these factors forced me to shoot at 1/15 exp and 15fps to get a reasonably full histogram. Unfortunately, the same factors saw a reduction in the number of overall frames to work with and I ended up stacking only 200 frames in each channel. Hence the pic is a little grainer as a result of wavelet processing.
GRS is just rising, and I like the cloud detail in the SEB.
Cheers.

great to see the RGB up and running.
yes, i was in the same boat trying to get some BIG scale, but 15fps was the result.
I am now resigned to the fact that a 10" mirror stops at f40 odd @ 30fps for the histogram to be fullish.
I just need a bigger mirror :D
What filters did you end up getting?
Hi David.
Am using the Astronomik Type 2 filters.
They seem pretty good, although not parfocal. Which is a little disappointing, since the advertising blurb makes that claim.
Anyway...they are pretty close, and the light throughput seems good. They also have a built-in IR block.
Cheers.

nice going Matt, good to see you working your set up.

thanks Matt, i think for the big focal lengths, it would be hard to get the focus just right for all filters.
Bird is getting some new ones I think and compare them to the astromiks

Another very nice Jupiter Matt :)
Colour looks very natural to me.

Hi Matt - nice natural colouring for an RGB jobby, well done.
For the grain I wonder if you shouldn't try just ignoring the histogram and going with what looks just enough to see reasonable detail on the screen. That's what I do, but mainly because I can't work/understand the histo feature in IC capture:P
I remember Bird saying he doesn't try and fill the histogram either so maybe there's something in it.
cheers,
Rob
Hi Rob.
Hmmm.
Definitely two schools of thought here re: the histogram.
I'll give your suggestion a try. I'm keen to experiment with this cam and RGB processing.
I wasn't aware of Anthony's position on the histogram. Perhaps he'll see this thread and comment on the point you have raised?
Thanks, mate.

nice shot!
What time was that taken? 10 - 11ish? I got out and captured it around 12:30 and GRS was almost smack bang in the centre!
good amount of detail in your image and nice colors!
Hi Alex.
It was around 3.20am.
I'll just check with AstroCalc....and yes...that's about right for the morning of the 6th.
