First M20

Was up late the other night saw the clouds had parted so I had a go at M20.
132mm Willams Optics
QHY8 camera
4 X 900sec.

If only you can upload the higher resolution, as it shows up as a noisy picture and loses so much when its compressed into a little file.. Maybe post it at QHY as you can upload in High resolution..
The field is huge, and shows you dont need a big scope to create quality images.

Quite nice that. An hour of exposure is plenty on this region but your image looks pretty noisy Kenny, any idea why?

Colours look good Kenny. As others have said, it would be good investigate the cause of noise. Perhaps its the combine function you're using or simply jpg compression. Did you rotate/flip the image? It looks mirrored for some reason - not that its a bad thing. Keep it up.

Looks good Kenny. Nice colors and guiding looks very good.
But like mentioned it does look a little grainy in the darker areas...maybe file compression for posting?

others have commented on the noise, wide field shots contain so much detail the poor old jpg has to work hard to get it all in i think.

Doesn't matter what you do, JPEG is a "lossy" image format to begin with, so you're bound to get pixellation and loss of information.

However, you can change the ratio of compression by altering the YUV values. That might help out a bit.

Great shot, its nice to see a bit of blue for a change :). Is the noise like that on the original image? Sometimes my images are 'noisy' if i forget my dew shield.

It's good to get feedback from other. I don't really know what went wrong. The raws were okay. The only thing I can think of was I missed something as I'm moving from Astroart to Maxdl. These programs work differently and affect the camera as well. Anyway have used the same raws to produce this. It’s a crop and downsize but it is interesting to compare with Peter Wards. Peter's is a great shot, and it shows what a 14 inches, Aol, and tri colour imaging can do.

Firstly allow me to apologise in advance for my ignorance to a lot of technical terms regarding Imaging.

I dont have much of an idea what " noise " is, in this image.
I look at the photo and see something a little different to most I guess.

Please dont take me wrongly . But I see an image of a very beautiful region of the sky. And I guess not knowing much of the technical issues with imaging, I can just sit back and enjoy.:D

This is an image that no matter how I look at it, shows detail and colour in the nebula and the surrounding stars, that is a pleasure to look at.

I love M20, you captured the colors beautifully.

I agree, much of the results we produce is related to software and the fine (dark) art using these tools in processing.

Hi Geoff, if you look closely at the first image Kenny posted, you can see that the images looks like its getting poor TV reception, like snow on the picture with bad reception, but in this case its black snow. While if you look at the last image he put up, the snow is gone..

Thanks for the comments; it just goes to show that getting the raw data is half the game. Processing as we all find out sooner or later is half the fun.
Geoff you are right we shouldn't loose sight of the beauty these images can show, but we don't just post our best on here we post to learn and share. It’s important that everyone feels free to post their images and receive advice and encouragement. More importantly people should take the comments in the good will they were given.
