View Full Version here: : Snagged a bargain on Hartung's....

Many of you will remember a thread running here around about a year ago , concerning the book "Hartung's Astronomical Objects for Southern Telescopes" (the 1995, much improved and expanded 2nd edition).
A quick recap - this book is well out of print, hard to get even 2nd hand, and some (unscrupulous) book retailers had it advertised on their websites at well over $200!

Anyway .... I was browsing the very small but pleasant Astronomy section in my local Angus & Robertson Bookworld an hour or so ago and what did I see but a copy of Hartung's sitting on the shelf! I grabbed it instantly in case this mirage vanished into thin air, turning it over carefully to read it fully and make sure it really was what it appeared to be.

The sticker was there on the front cover : RRP $87.95
and a "Sale" price listed too ... which I'll get to in a minute. ;)

Now I visit this store reasonably frequently and this book has NEVER appeared on the shelf previously that I know of. I was chasing a copy of this 12 months ago, my girlfriend even sourced one form a reputable online book dealer in Toronto ands had it sent over for my birthday last year, but alas the book never arrives, lost somewhere in the post.

(The dealer, a very descent company, refunded her money and said if the book ever turned up we could keep it as compensation for all the hassle. Sadly it never appeared.)

So now with karma apparently on my side I made my way to the counter in a slow and steady way (lest I wake up and ruin this dream). I handed both the book and my cash to the woman behind the counter, and asked here did she know how it was possible that they had it here for sale?

She said she believed it was a book that the owner had taken home (I know he does have an interest in Astronomy), it had probably been there some time and he had probably just recently brought back in to the store and offered it for sale.

Do you want to know the really REALLY best part of all of this?
Given the very slight wear on the upper spine edge of the dust jacket (the book itself is immaculate and looks not to have even been read) they were selling it at $24.95.

:D

It pays to keep your eyes open, and never give up hope!

Well Steve, we know each other from diddly-squat: but I hope that that was karma/kismet - which/whatever, what a lucky break!!!

Regards, Darryl.

Woohoo! Well done Steve:thumbsup:

Isn't it great finding a bargain.

I remember feeling the same way when I picked up the O'Meara (Caldwell/Messier objects) books for a pretty fair price on Amazon.

Enjoy:D

Nice Steve, I'm sure you would be happy with that price, yes, it is amazing what we can find if one is patient and in the right spot at the right time.

An excellent find and a true bargain, well done Steve.

I have trained our local second hand book dealer to look out for astronomical books, he now rings me about once a month and lets me know what has recently come in.

Cheers

Well spotted Steve.
Darryl, knowing Steve, I know for sure that it was good karma that lead him to that book.;)

Must have been all those prayers to St. Hartung, Steve...

Congratulations, and enjoy.

Nice find !

Sometimes the hunt is a good as the prize !

I visit my local book store every few weeks and look through their sidewalk tables.

There is invariably at least one Astro title amongst the 1000's of books being cleared from the publishers warehouses at prices that are usually at least a quarter of the original rrp if not less.

The diversity is quite high and since the prices are so low it makes it hard not to buy them !!

I sometimes buy 2 copies of the good ones and offer them around to friends.

Cheers

Congrats on the well deserved find.
Now that it is out of print can the book be scanned and placed on Google books?

Fahim

That is quite a bargain.
I happenned upon it in a bookshop a couple of years ago, so I bought it, thinking that it would be handy as soon as I can give it my attention - but I think I paid about 70 bucks for it then.
Before that, I had only seen it in mail order catalogues.

I didn't know it was out of print at the moment.

That reminds me.

I received my new book from Amazon today; Stephen O'Meara's Hidden Treasures.

Brand new delivered from the US for $23 or something stupid

Wow, that's a great price. I think I paid about 3x that amount ... I had it on pre-order at Amazon for months.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

Darryl we don't know each other as you say, but I like t think it was karma and you sound like a bloke who deserves your own share of that too.
(Thanks for the backup Jeanette, I owe you ;))

Matt sounds like you found a good bargain with your books too.
I've been meaning to give you a call for a while too, been so busy I haven't done it yet. Any chance of catching up at Ron's this weekend instead?

Thanks for the generous bids guys, maybe once I read it a few dozen times I'd be ready to think about selling it again. Not!

This is a bit more reasonable. But whether they have it in stock is another question.
