New Member's?

I was just going threw the members list for something to do & noticed A lot of new member's that have never even posted anything as yet. Why bother joining a forum & then not make any post's? I understand that circumstance's change...Like loss of interest/broken puter/left town etc.

But I find it somewhat strange.:confuse3:

It's been like that since I joined John. Lot's of new memebers after me but many who have never posted. Membership does give access to certain parts of the site visitors can't get to. Maybe that's all they are after, snooping around!

Hey, this site keeps changing. Whilst writing the last post the green dot saying we are online has changed, and the 'quick reply' icon in the lower right corner just changed too!

Mike, while you are fiddling around changing things where is the new index catagory for 'Star Parties and gatherings'. (newbies will think we have 'parties')

That's ok...I'm having trouble with refreshing....Not sure how to explain it!? I usually just wait till I see a thread is 'high-lighted' which usually means someone has added a new post. I read it, the I keep browsing in different area's for new post's....But when I get back to the area I was in five mins earlier, That thread that Iv'e already viewed will still be high-lighted....but with no new posts!?

I just click on 'New Posts'. I usually bounce between new posts and 'Who's Online'.

That's normal, because the forum uses cookies to determine your last visit time. The cookie timeout is 15 minutes, so if you're still logged in after 15 minutes it will mark them as "read".

You can also click on the "Mark Forums Read" link, to mark all posts and forums as "read", so new posts will show up with the new post indicator.

That's the same for any forum, anywhere. There's a lot of people who join up just to belong, not everyone wants to post or be active in the community. Of course we try to encourage everyone to post, but a lot of people just "browse". A lot of people browse and don't even register.

The hard part is getting the "guests" to register, and then it's also hard to get shy members to start posting their questions or answers!

Forums aren't for everyone, they're only a recent phenomena in some ways (as opposed to news groups) and younger people usually have no problem jumping in the deep end. For others, it might take more courage to make that first "hi, i'm new here" post.

In any case, we welcome everyone here.. guests, active and non-active members alike.

By the way asimov, the apostrophy is used for contraction of words and indicating possesion, not plurality (post's, member's, view's).

And may I add, MIG my boy...that is incorrect. 'POSSESSION' is the correct way I believe? Have a nice night. :thumbsup:

We are talking about members posts and you have to tear a guy down coz of his 'contractions'. Haven't you noticed your own spelling mistakes from time to time?

MiG :rofl: you pulling up people on proper english - when there are people who don't even make the effort to spell the 3 or 4 word title of their thread correctly - ( thats like fingernails on a blackboard to this old 'spelling belted into you generation' fart - or swearing is to some others) - bad/groovy/hip spelling is absolutely fine and is to be expected in the messages content - but for the title! :confused:

I didn't tear asimov down. The fact that I posted about it can be rude, but the fashion in which I did it can't. Also, note my custom title. I am pedantic and I don't think it's a bad thing.
I agree with you that I make mistakes. For example, I spelt apostrophe wrong. :doh: How ironic.

asimov: If english isn't your native language then I am sorry for correcting you. I thought you were being lazy, and I believe that if it isn't worth putting effort into a post then it isn't worth reading (especially if it's in SMS style writing).

Now for the thread topic. Some forums don't show all the sections and hide search functions unless you register. Also, if you register and lurk for a while, and then your first post is asking for help, it shows that you aren't just here for an easy answer. In fact, some forums ask members to lurk for a while before posting (somethingawful.com if I remember correctly).

Mig. I agree with the way that you said it was ok. The fact that you mentioned it at all was wasting your time & effort, as well as the rest of us. I am an aussie..born in Adelaide. How can I be lazy if I'm adding apostrophes where their not supposed to be? The fact remains I did not learn much at school because I was dreaming of building a telescope etc etc....I had my head in the clouds literally!

"Judge not, and ye shall not be judged" I prefer to twist that statement into my own configuration: "Think before inserting size 12 boot into mouth" I can remember when I 1st joined this forum, & seeing all the atrocious spelling lol..instead of offending people, I simply suggested in a post of mine, that a spell-check would be a good idea for this forum, lol

Its the content not the grammer that matters, whether asking a question , giving advice or making a comment.
If its understandable who cares how its spelt or punctuated.
First we had to have an IQ test and now we have to show we have an above average grasp of our language.

I wouldnt lock this thread I'd delete it.
It started as a simple question and was then sidetracked.
