Hi guys! :)
just wondering if any of you guys have an astronomical "arch nemesis", like an object you have never been able to find or a double you have never been able to split or posibly a nebula you have never been able to resolve any detail in.... :scared2:
I personally have 2. both are planetary nebula and both are really well known.
1. The crab nebula: I have only spotted it a few times in my 8" using first a 30mm SV to find it and then zooming in with various othe EPs. Its has never been more than a blob... a very very faint blob. I just cant get any detail out of it no matter what i do. Admittedly I havent tried it at a dark site yet tho. I dont expect to see the detail seen in pic but it really look just like a cloud to me and I want more!. Unfortunately it's gone for now...
2. The Helix: I had been looking for this for ages with no luck at all till our Linden observing night. Finally after all this time i found it! (thanks to narayan and louie:)) It didnt show on the night but I was stoked! but now I also want detail from it. It showed in Louie's 16mm nagler as a nice big (reads huge) ring with his filter on (what was that filter louie?). with out the filter the ring became fainter and started to break down in areas. the un filtered viewof it with the 16mm nagler and my very own 15mm SV were very similar tho the nagler was a bit more contrasty.
there should be 2 rings there and my objective will be to see enuff detail to make out the 2 rings at least.
splitting sirius was one too but I've done that now :D
Whats your arch nemesis? :wink2:
